4l80/4l85

Anyone running one of these transmissions? If so, was it worth the money and does it fit without beating the floorpans? Any info would help me make my decision on what to do.

Do they rob any more hp than a TH400?

Re: 4l80/4l85

Yes, good question special-k. Does anyone know the answer to that? What kind of engine are you running weircc? Any other suggestions for an overdrive trans that can stand 800+HP and be reasonably priced? This is the best deal I have found so far. Hot Rod Magazine just put a 4l85 in a 69' Camaro but they paid 7000.00 for theirs from GearStar. Can it be that much better?

I have a 4L80 in my 68 crew cab, love it. I used the computer from a 1991 Suburban.

Re: 4l80/4l85

I used mounts from the 1991 Suburban which I believe is the same as a 400 mount. Mine is in a 4x4 so it might make a difference but I took apart a couple of 2x4s and the mount looked like the 400.

Re: 4l80/4l85

I've got one in my Suburban. Since it isn't running quite yet I can only comment on the fit. It clears everything quite easily with the high hump in mine. Had to modify/make my own crossmember, but it wasn't too tough.

Re: 4l80/4l85

i have a big block in my truck i never drove mine with 4l80e just installed because thats what i had but changed my mind didn't feel like dealing with all the computer drama, my truck is a low hump cab it fit great, my stock cross member worked as well. as far as the horse power robbing that's just what several ppl have told me (CANNOT CONFIRM) but it weighs a ton more than the 700r4 i replaced it with that's for sure. i have read that ppl take a 93 computer and strip it down some how to run the 4l80 but could never confirm on how to do it.

Re: 4l80/4l85

I have a 4L85E in my 69 with a 502 but haven't driven it yet. It fits great (low hump in my truck). I used my stock crossmember with a th400 trans mount, however, I had to move the crossmember back a bit and drill new bolt holes. I bought the part number from the GM performance parts book (pn 19154550) they call it a "SuperMatic", it's was built to go behind the 720HP 572 (more clutch plates and stuff). It was just over $3000 from the Chevy dealer with conveter (2200 rpm stall) but no computer/wiring harness, dip stick or yoke. It also has no speedo drive gear so you need to buy a electronic to mechanical cable drive or change to digital speedo. Good things are you can tune the trans with a laptop, shift points, shift stiffness, line pressures and if you change tire/wheel size or rear gear ratio you just put the new information in the computer and it recalibrates the speedo.

Re: 4l80/4l85

So which years are the best to look out for in the Classifieds, etc?? I've got a line on one locally that's got 12K on a rebuild for $500 with converter, just want to avoid gettin' a model year that might not be the best.

Re: 4l80/4l85

Thanks for all the info guys. I see ItsRandy went with the GMPP Supermatic for around 3000.00. As you can see in post #5, Monster Transmission has them for 1777.00. You think this goes back to the old saying "you get what you pay for"? Has anyone dealt with Monster Transmission or heard any testimonials about them. And is a th400 and a th350 mount the same?

Re: 4l80/4l85

B&M also sells a computer for $576. It works with 4L80E/4L85E and allows control over several variables without the use of a computer.

This was a brand new trans with a 2 year warranty. I just hope I get the truck running before the warranty runs out.

No, I'm running a 700r4 that is on it's last legs. I'm thinking of going with a 4L80 and found this one when researching computer options.
