Question How To ....???

I just bought a new ignition lock (the center keyed piece) and I'm wondering how easy it is to change out the old for the new? Do I have to take the whole ignition out of the dash, disconnecting the wiring harness and all that, or can I simply remove the keyed lock and put the new one in?

Anyone who has done this, please let me know.

Thanks,
72

Re: How To ....???

no need too take the whole thing out or even dissconnect the ing harness.
use a small pin or stiff wire insert it in the little hole next too the key with the key in the ing. push on the lil' pin while turning the key to the ass. position the cly should come out

often these can be a pretty tricky some times they come out easy
when inserting the pin/needle or wire you should feel a very little spring plunger once again it can be tricky

on my 67 I noticed i had too turn the key too the ass.pos and insert the pin it didnt line up in the off pos. and also I had to clamp a small vise grip on the key to give some leverage to be able too turn it too ass.(maybe because my hands are all but useless) but anyway once you find that little plunger through the hole just turn it too ass. it should pop out.

That is very close. You have to insert the key and turn it to the left (counterclockwise) as far as it will go BEFORE you insert the stiff wire (a large paper clip works very well). That lines up the hole with the spring loaded release pin. It takes very little pressure to push the pin in. After you push the pin in you have to turn the lock cylinder to the left a little more. As you are turning it you have to remove the wire or it will bind in the lock. You may have to wiggle the lock cylinder a little as you are pulling on the key. It should come right out. If it doesn't you can try spraying some penetrating oil into the keyway to lube it up a little and try it again..

The reason I say to turn it to the left as far as it will go instead of saying turn it to the accessory position is because all original '67's and some '68's do not have an accessory position on the ignition switch.
