67-72 4x4 big block headers

im planning on puting a 454 in my 69 k20 . im having no luck finding headers to fit since we all know 67-72 4x4s didnt come with a big block . any one else out there done this swap what headers did you use? im think maybe 73-87 4x4 big block ones might work. im also gonna keep it manual trans will headers even work ? or will i have to go with manifolds?

Re: 67-72 4x4 big block headers

looking at my Dad's stock 1972 K20 suburban I don't see how headers can even fit with a smallblock lol..

if the motor you are going with is not too wild you might look into shorty headers rather than full-length. It might make them quite a bit easier to fit...

Here's a link to a page on my website showing what I did with my 454 in my 69 K20.

Re: 67-72 4x4 big block headers

When I built my truck I was able to buy hooker super comp headers for it. I believe I paid somewhere around $350 for them (that was about 16 yrs ago) I believe you could also buy hooker comp headers as well. Unless they discontinued them, you should be able to buy the hookers.

Re: 67-72 4x4 big block headers

Also check the exhaust port shape. My truck I bought has a 454 in it with rectangular ports and round tube headers wich cause a bit of a nasty exhaust leak. The driver's side clears but the passenger side has a nice ground out portion for the header to clear that side. I bought the correct type of headers for it but the a bigger primary tube size so I now have to shim my engine up some and hope for the best.

Re: 67-72 4x4 big block headers

I'm running F body BBC headers with an 86 K30 hydro clutch which I got the idea from this site. If you look closely I did need to have a 1 5/8" spacer machined to fit between the flange on the bellhousing and the slave cylinder. don't know if it changes anything but I am using the motor crossmember from the 86 K30 also.
