Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

Hi folks. New here. I am going to start a search for a new project, need need to know where to begin. I want to find a truck like my Grandfather used to own at our family lumber yard. Any help w/ model/year/color would be greatly appreciated. Attached is the only photo I have. My uncle thinks the truck was a 1979-81. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

Looks like a 1974 GMC? (Cab trim looks red to me and it has drip rail moldings that were not available in '73) Half ton with the wood grained door panel trim making it a upper trim level truck. Definitely not 79-80 . Those are the early hubcaps. Someone on here may have a paint code sample book that can narrow it down by the color green .Nice truck.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

Welcome to the Forum!!!!

I'm new to the restoring truck game, the biggest help would be if you had a picture of the grille or someone could remember what the headlights looked like that's the one way to get the year down quicker. By the side picture to be honest it could be anywhere from a 73-87, the color is a 2 tone looks like a pea green, with white, no way to tell if its a custom deluxe, silverado, or what submodel it is. Or At least I can't some of the other guys might be able to help, but I'm listing all the items I can tell.

Hope it helps you out some.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

I don't think it is a '74...wouldn't a '74 have the big rectangular fender emblem? I think I can see the edge of the script style emblems.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

The hubcaps make it pre 77. The fender emblem is post 74.
It looks a Silverado inner door panel with the aluminum band that goes almost to the window so again pre 77.
I agree 75 or 76...

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

Its between a 1974 and 1976. That should get you in the ball park of what you need to look for when you get a truck to replicate this one. The chrome buckles in the bench seat shows that its older than 78-80. We know its not a 77 because it has black in the side trim instead of yellow.

FYI..81-87 never had side trim like this. So your statement of anywhere from 73-87 is wrong.

Ditto, the last thing to ID would be the grill.

Lot of good IDing here. I think it would be awesome to replicate your Grandfather's truck, especially one from his business. Best of luck.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

fuel was by cap until and through 78. Fuel doors started in 79. i cant see if the logo is the old square GMC one, but it was 73 AND 74 only. the color is throwing me off, because I think its a 73-74 color only (baby poop green...). i think its a 74.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

Looks like Spring Green to me. And I agree, it's most likely a 75/76. I've only seen that color (spring green) on 75 and 76 models. Looks like a half ton GMC to me of a high trim level.

Depending on the DMV rules in your state, you may be able to run what vehicles were registered in his name.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

Looking at the pic i think i can just make out the date code on the side glass.

just kidding!
When did they stop using those hubcaps? I thought they had changed to a different cap by 75 or 76. I am sure it's a 74,75, or 76 but I can't see the emblem enough to determine if its squared or not. You might check with the local dealership if they are still around and see if they still have any old sales files with your grandfathers sale contract. Either way that's a cool truck that should be easy to replicate and the green only makes it more unique.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

I searched commercials on youtube and the 74 blazer in the ad had the same hubcaps. wich helps get a general consensus on it being 74 it seems. also the cab corner trim looks closer to that chevy yellow trim than gm red corner trim to me. here is the commercial. Also did Gm do the sport mirrors? i dont know but for some reason i want to say ive only seen them on chevy`s i could be dead wrong on the mirrors though.

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

here is a picture and a link to the website, this page is another reason i believe its a 74 chevy, only differance i can note is the one on the page is a camper special but your grandfathers was not. (absence of towing mirrors and no camper special badge under corner trim)

Re: Help identifying my Grandpa's truck

According to Parts Catalog those hubcaps were available Chev. or GMC and they show up in the '73-'78 catalog, and the '79-'84 for 80-82 only GMCs.
