what transmission to go with advice please..

well as of now i have a rebuilt to stock specs 454. i am planning on slapping some heads later with a nice cam to match but nothing to crazy. i was wondering if i should go with a 700r or a th400. im really lost when it comes to this. is not my daily driver nor will it ever be. just thinking a 700r will die too quick. but i think the th400 is gonna have the 454 screaming on freeway. input please guys thanks.

I would go with the 700R4 for there gas mileage and they can be built to handle your 454.

Unless you have a really good broom to sweep up the guts of that 700r4 every few months just put a th400 in it. The only good option for an overdrive trans behind a big block is the 4l80e but you have to deal with a computer to run it.

Unless you go crazy with the motor a good 700 will work for a while. But the 400 or a 4l80 is better

400 turbo is easiest and less hassle and less expensive. If you decide to modify the bbc, the 400th can be built to a 475th for little $'s. The fun thing is it will shift when left in first gear to second on its own, at the top of its gain, cherp.

Well I think a 400TH would do the job with out sweating an give you peace of mind. But the 700R4 would work too. But you would always be thinking when it is going to go in the back of your mind unless be fairly easy on it.

Re: what transmission to go with advice please..

Building a 700R4 to stand up to a mild 454 gets pricey...To the point its not worth the fuel savings. Same thing with cost of a 4L80E swap.

A TH400 would be the best bet. A TH475 just has straight cut planets...& noisey. How many people have broke TH400 planets??

Re: what transmission to go with advice please..

A built 700 is going to cost about $2500 to last any decent time behind the 454, and that is now about what a 4L80E can be swapped in for with a bench rebuild.

If you can find a low mileage 4L80 for $500, the controller cost about $600, and requisite drive shaft mods. You could likely do it for less then $1500 if you search.

Plus the 4L80 will last behind a warmed up 454 with nothing more then a shift kit, and correct tuning.

Re: what transmission to go with advice please..

I would put a 400 T in that, & never look back! The BB will have enough power to pull a taller rear gear....give you a little better "cruise speed' on the hyway, & still rock &roll on the "loud peddle'....crazyL
