Hi. I have a Eaton rear in my 72 Suburban that is howling when I acelerate.
Im told its the pinion seal.
Anyone know what kind of cost I am looking at to get this correct ?

I really haven't heard seals make things "howl". Pinion bearing maybe? Ring and Pinion contact could be? Low on gear oil? I am just guessing.

Actually you can do the seal yourself if you are careful. The way I've done it in the past with a friend was
Remove the drive shaft
Heat the Pinion nut with a torch to expand the nut
Get someone to hold the brakes tight
Big breaker bar and I seem to recall 1 5/16 socket to remove nut This took 2 of us pushing on the bar in the day
Use a puller to remove yoke from pinion shaft
Pull old seal out and tap in new
Install old pinion yoke and NEW nut
Torque to spec. Do not overtighten.

Seals don't howl, its probably improper gear mesh..

Good news. Pull the axles, pull the drive shaft, pull the carrier, put it on the bench or take it to the shop.

If your pinon bearings are on the way out the pinon gear will want to climb the ring gear. This adds alot of load to the gear set and makes noise. If the pinon bearings are loose you may see gear lube seeping past the seal. Drain the lube by removing the cover and take a look inside. Look at the ware in the teeth then go online and check the pattern and see whats up. If you unhook the drive shaft you can twist the yoke and check back lash. At least how much **** is floating around in there and you can go thicker lube to get by for a short time.

(lol)

Seals don't make an axle howl. As mentioned, improper gear mesh/low oil/failing axle are the usual culprits.
