Power Steering pump
I noticed that on my 69 Chevy C10, the belt for the power steering belt is not lined up right. It sits a little crooked. I am thinking that the problem is the brackets. They seem to be custom made. Not only is the belt crooked, but the line coming out of the back of the pump is hitting the block. I am thinking of buying new brackets, but noticed that they all say that they are for Saginaw P-series pumps. My question, how can I confirm that my pump is a Saginaw P-series? I didn't see any markings on the pump. It does look the same, but I'm not sure if there are subtle differences.

If you have a small block, to my research and knowledge, there is only one pump for your truck.

 also do you have a long or short water pump? The short pump is very close to the timing cover and the long pump is about a 1/2 inch away. The brackets have to match the water pump and the pulleys must match also. If it's just a tiny bit off you can shim the PS pump forward or backwards in the bracket with washers.

It has the long water pump. I actually was going to try to sim the power steering pump, but the way the brackets are, it is impossible to sim. So I will have to buy new brackets. That is why I want to make sure that I buy the right brackets.

Long pump was not original for our trucks, as you saw above. There are tons of threads on here about lining up all the pulleys, and having the right ones to begin with. If you have a long pump and the crank pulley aligns with it, it will throw off your PS pulley.
When I faced this issue I went back to a short pump and put together a set of correct pulleys. It took some trial and error. You might get lucky and find a junk engine that you can strip , or you can contact one of the bigger parts sellers on this board and they may be able to put a set together for you. Either way, it's easier to change out the water pump than to mess with the PS brackets IMO. |

One top of the pulleys not lining up, the PS pump line is hitting the block. That is why I figure it is better to change the brackets.

If you have homemade brackets, I would start by sourcing the right brackets (again, the bigger parts sellers on this board would be a good place to start), then see where your ps pump _should_ be, then go from there.
If you can find a junkyard engine that has all its brackets and pulleys, you can shortcut this process a lot, but those are hard to find these days. |
