72 Brake pedal linkage

Has anyone disassembled the brake pedal from the clutch pedal shaft at the steering column support box. Any thoughts on the process? My brake pedal, even when it is disconnected from the booster rod, seems "sticky" and does not move with absolute freedom. Dirt, grime, rust, etc seems the logical culprit. Will the spring holding the clutch pedal in position fly off with brute force once it is removed from the peg on the pedal? Just being cautious!
Thanks
