700R4 to TH400 Swap Problem
My dad and I are swapping out a failing 700R4 for a rebuilt TH400 with a B&M TC from a previous C10 project. We have everything mounted and bolted up, but when we came to bolting the TC to the flexplate we came across this issue:
The bolts seem to be lining up but the gap is too far for the bolt to engage the TC. Any ideas what the problem could be? |

Are you trying to put the 700r4 converter on the TH400?

It looks just like it should. Take a small prybar and pry the converter out to the flywheel.

Re: 700R4 to TH400 Swap Problem
Nope. It's the TH400 and B&M convertor from a previous project. All of the holes lined up. It's just when we were tapping the engine to turn the flexplate the TC just sucked in further into the transmission

Re: 700R4 to TH400 Swap Problem
Cool. As someone mentioned you should be able to pull the TC out to make it flush. My TC has threaded nuts, so as I tighten it it pulls itself up to the flywheel.

Re: 700R4 to TH400 Swap Problem
X2......looks normal to me. If it was already tight up against the flexplate, I would be concerned that the TC might not be fully engaged into the pump.

Re: 700R4 to TH400 Swap Problem
So I am still having issues with this transmission. The TC/Flywheel bolted up just fine but the truck is still immobile.
When the truck is up on jack stands and the transmission is in gear, the wheels spin forward. Even if it is in reverse. However when I have it on the ground the truck will not move. Forward or backward. Even when I push on the truck while it's in neutral. It won't budge. It's in a bind. We have checked/repaired/replaced the vacuum, checked/filled the fluid levels, dropped the pan and replaced the filter. The fluid didn't smelled burned and there wasn't any debris in the pan. Would the u-joints have something to do with it? We had to Frankenstein the th400 driveshaft (slip yoke) with the u-joints from the 700R4 shaft. What could be the issue? Our next step is to pull the governor and replace it if need be. Any ideas would be appreciated. I really don't know what to do next. |

Re: 700R4 to TH400 Swap Problem
Check cooler flow by running both lines into a bucket with rubber hoses.
If no fluid, Check line pressure at the 1/8" pipe fitting above the Shift Shaft with a pressure gage. |
