Rare 86' Gmc K3500?

Hi everyone, i will be purchasing a 1986 GMC K3500 Dually 4x4 and it was a cab-chassis from the factory. I've found alot of dually's and a few 4x4 w/dually, but i haven't found any that were factory cab-chassis. Are they rare? Or am i blowing it out of porportion. If it helps at all, it is the 5.7 350 with 4 speed. (I assume 1-3 + L =4 speed?

Thanks

Re: Rare 86' Gmc K3500?

From what I understand cab and chassis trucks had a much larger build number than pickups,I have seen much fewer pickups than cab/chassis trucks. Drivetrain isn't anything special, sounds like it was just a barebones truck. If it was a single wheel K30 cab/chassis it would be a little more uncommon.

It's been mentioned there's no "rare" squarebodys, but there sure are plenty of uncommon and desirable models. That being said if it's solid and reasonably priced I'd sure be all over it (I'm not too far away haha).

A lot of the cab and chassis were work trucks and have long since been crushed. The dually pickups were more personal use and often higher spec and have survived. The only good source for cab and chassis is ex fire trucks.

Because who puts their old clapped out wood truck or utility truck online? Haha.

As 80sport said, cab and chassis trucks appealed to commercial buyers for obvious reasons, and most work trucks are destined for certain death. Not to mention the northeast winters killed most of them off.
I could go on Craigslist right now and find at least 4 cab and chassis c30's or k30's. **** I could even point a half dozen of them out sitting on farms around my town. My neighbor even has an 87 k30!

Yup, that's what my 86 K30 Cab/chassis was before I converted it to a dump, a fire truck.

Re: Rare 86' Gmc K3500?

As stated above cab n chassis trucks are everywhere. Most went to work as public works vehicles city trucks fire Dept's military support and contractors etc. Out here in the southwest probably 99 percent are 2wd because 4wd was not needed and I see them for sale all the time. When I've traveled to the east I've seen yards full of 4wd company trucks parked in the back forty of a lot because they don't use them anymore. As most of us know any type of government vehicle local, state etc. are usually sold at auction and considering the body style is 20 plus years old most are in public hands now. How many of those people cruise around in 3 speed flatbed dump trucks that likely get 10 mpg or less. Most are still parked in the back forty of some property rarely used because they are a one purpose truck for hauling firewood or hay or feeding the cows. Almost like collector cars hidden away still running and drive able but rarely brought out anymore.

Re: Rare 86' Gmc K3500?

I always wanted to build a flatbed on 4x4 cab / chassis. Found this '86 gmc K3500 a couple years ago. The cab was shot so on went this '74. The longer wheelbase and narrow rear makes for a killer worktruck.

Like whats been said most cab and chassis trucks are work trucks and when they got too old they went to the junkyard.
