Dad scores again! 1969 C20 BBC/auto

Dad scored another nice truck the other day. He just called me, and he and my brother are on their way to get it and bring it home. This one is special!

It is a cherry, all original 1969 Chevy C20. I think he said the SPID said 396. Automatic trans, interior very dusty but cherry. No cracks or warps in the dash pad, door panels wiped clean and shiny. The seat is in bad shape, but original. He said he thinks he can see the build sheet under the seat springs. Powell72 and I were looking at the pics this morning and it almost looks like it has split rims on it. He got it for $500. It looks to me like we can wash it real good (engine has about an inch of dirt on top) and run it. Oil is clean, plugs are barely brown. Gonna pull the carb and the rest of the plugs to make sure it is clean inside before we try to fire it.

OK, the special part. This truck was bought new in 69 by my Dad's uncle John! The guy Dad bought it from is an old high school buddy of his. He bought it from Dad's uncle some time ago, and is now moving to Nebraska and didn't want to drag the truck along. He called Dad to tell him he owned it, and wanted to see if Dad would be interested in buying it. Dad went and looked at it and asked him what he wanted for it. The guy told him $500, and Dad wrote a check about 5 seconds later.

So I think once we get the Blazer cleaned out and get some better pics, we will put it up for sale or part it out, then start on this one.

LMK what you decide on the Blazer, as I'd like a crack at the top. BTW super cool picking up a truck with so much history!

Yup, you are first on the list for Blazer stuff.

One thing I forgot to add - the Protect-O-Plate with Uncle John's name and address, along with a bunch of fuel receipts (from 70, 71, and 72), and a KOA receipt ($3!) were in the original clear plastic GM envelope in the glove box!

Another one for the fleet I see...

Nice score, especially for only $500!

I didn't look very close to the SPID, but it is a turquoise color.

Re: Dad scores again! 1969 C20 BBC/auto

When and looked at it last night. It is actually in real nice shape, except for the 3 ton of dirt! Both build sheets were under the seat, the dash pad is soft with NO cracks or hard spots, door panels or like new under the dirt, wing window chrome looks new. Everything we will need for a build is in great condition. Will need the usual rockers and cab corners, but that's about it.

We will be using the bed and front clip off of my 68 K10, then we will have this front clip for sale sometime down the road. So what we will end up with is a 69 LWB with 1/2 ton suspension F&R, 68 front clip, and a 396/TH400 combo.

This should be fun!

It's looking that way.

Dad just called me again. I swear, he sounds like a 16 year old kid with this thing! It's great! He and my brother are working on it right now (they own an excavating business together, quitting time is whenever they say it is!). This truck has not been started in 4 years. He said they pulled the carb to be sure there wasn't a bunch of crud in the manifold, then put the charger on the battery, ran a new line from the fuel pump to a gas can, and primed the carb a little. He said it fired up on the second turn!

He has the seat and mat out, and said the floor looks new. There is zero rust up near the kick panels, and the only rust in the cab so far is one cab corner and one rocker panel. No rust in the doors either.

The front clip looks great too, but it will come off and my extra 68 from clip will go on, as well as my other 68 bed.

I'm glad that the 396 runs and sounds good. Dad really wants to use that motor. We might pull the pan and see what the bottom end looks like, and take a look at the top end too.

Sounds like they are going to run it over to my brother's shop (right next door) and pull the front clip, bed, engine and trans and start steam cleaning the frame.

I'm really glad to see him getting excited about wrenching on a hot rod again. It's been a long time for him.

Does anyone know if the split rims are stock/optional? Also are they particularly rare or valuable?

I am even more impressed, turquiose is one of the rarer 1969 colors.

The standard rim was the one piece 16.5" and the 16" 2 piece was the optional wheel. It seems like 50% of 3/4 had 16" 2 piece rims from my experience. The 16" one piece was not available till the mid 70's.Most people do not want to deal with the extra expense with the 2 piece rims so they are not sought after or valuable. But they do give a pickup a tougher heavy duty look. A correct concourse points vehicle would either have 16.5" or 16" 2 piece rims in this era.

Re: Dad scores again! 1969 C20 BBC/auto

I took a pic of the SPID last night. It lists the color as WHT/TURQ/WHT, and the interior as TURQ CUST CLOTH TRIM. Looking through all the different catalogs I have, the only "green" color that seems to be listed is just green, never turquoise. 1969 is the only year I have seen turquoise listed as a factory color too (paint code 511).

Can you get us a pic of the seat cover without the saddle blanket? I'm curious and trying to learn all I can about the "Cust Cloth".

Re: Dad scores again! 1969 C20 BBC/auto

If Dad hasn't already took the original cover off I will. I think it is built like the houndstooth covers; cloth inserts with the rest being vinyl. The vinyl has the scrolling around the sides and top of the rear cover, don't remember the bottom cover.

Hopefully he didn't toss it so I can get a pic.
