307 Carb

Hey there. New member, but not new to the site. I've snooped around on this site for years as I've always loved these trucks, but just recently bought a 72 swb 4x4 and I know I'll have many questions that you guys will be able to help me out with I'm sure, so here goes.

My truck has the factory 307, but has a 4 bbl quadrajet sitting on top. In my bit of research no 307's came with a 4 bbl so that tells me someone slapped this on there at some point. When I step on it, it bogs down pretty bad for a second or two, then gets going. I'm wondering whether this carb is too big for the motor and if so would that cause this issue? I've got a nice new 14x3 filter on it along with new plugs, wires, and a new HEI distributor so I know it's getting good spark and air. Any help is much appreciated.

By the way, the plan is to swap in a 350 at some point, but I'd like the 307 to run as well as it can for the time being (without throwing a ton of money at it).

Re: 307 Carb

Check the secondary air valve.
Could be set too loose.
Tap on it with your finger. It shouldn't pop open easily. If set right it should snap shut when you tap it open.
Another thing to check is your initial timing.
What's it set at?

The vacumn pod on the seconds air door could also be bad/or missing linkage? I agree with geezer....timing 1st 12-14 initial, should be close....just be sure to check the total, & not be past about 34 degrees(all in around 3000 rpms/vac advance un hooked & plugged). Longhorn

Re: 307 Carb

My initial timing was set to about 10 degrees, but I did advance to around 18. I didn't notice much of a power difference (being a 307 I'm not sure what I expected haha) so I'll dial it back. All the linkage is there so I'll check on the secondary valves. Thanks for the replies.
