Dana 60

Going to look at a dana 60 front axle tomorrow. We are going to use it in our 66 k20 to replace the original axle. This axle is out of a 1983 CHEVY one ton dump truck with a dullie rear. We Would like to know what we would have to do to this axle to make it fit from what we read, this should bolt right in. Are we going to need the spring pads and are we going to have to change the hubs out on this axle. Also can you give us a ballpark figure of what we should spend on this axle, or what they are worth. Thanks evan396

Re: Dana 60

I would get the spring plates if you can. You will need to replace the dually front hubs. Around my way they go for about $1000, with minimal amount of work needed.

Re: Dana 60

The spring pads are on the axle and need no attention. The u-bolt plates and u-bolts are the only thing different and the correct ones just bolt up. As a rule, the dual wheel Dana60 axles go for less than single wheel, since single is what the off road guys want and to convert the dual wheel axle is a decent sized added expense. I wouldn't pay more than $500, since you can pay $700-1,000 on the single that bolts right in

Re: Dana 60

Off road design sells the single wheel front hubs. I thinks they are over $500 pair.

Thanks, we picked it up this afternoon. Got it for $300. Looks good too! Just have to look for a set of hubs now, maybe we could get a set of used hubs. Thanks evan396

Re: Dana 60

You did well! I'm thinking used with be very hard to find. But I won't discourage you from trying. Best of luck to you. Even with buying the new parts you'll be in good shape on price.

Re: Dana 60

Thanks, we also got the spring plates to. We have heard that you can get the hubs turned down and have been looking into that. Have any of you had that done. We would like to know what is involved in that. Is it just cutting the outer flange off and opening up the wheel stud holes. It would be helpful if someone could post the dimensions of a single wheel hub. Thanks evan396

Re: Dana 60

You can machine the flange down. Do a search with pirate4x4 in it. Some say not to do it on a street truck, but for trail only. I personally don't see an issue with it. Cheaper and easier than getting SRW hubs. Junkyards here have 60s, but only external hub for Dodges....

Re: Dana 60

I am looking at a dana 60/14 bolt combo now, $1500. $300 is awesome price, especially if it is in good shape.

Re: Dana 60

You can probably still bring it in at a decent price that's worth the trouble if it has the gears you want. As long as your doing the hubs you can pick up some D70 stub shafts and the 35 spline lockers, as long as you have it apart for bearing and everything.

Re: Dana 60

Most likely a 14ff. 88 to maybe 90 GM used the dana 70 in 1 tons, but after they used the 14ff exclusively. If its' the HD, it's a Dana 80, with 10 lugs and discs.

I was responding to E396. just suggesting you look at the Beefier outers as long as you have it apart you might look into it. looks like your post got a bit hijacked
