Steering wheel colors
Can some one tell me if the 67/68 OEM steering wheels were just painted the interior color or were they coated some how. I've got one that has been painted and I'd like to get to the original color underneath without ruining it.

Re: Steering wheel colors
Tuned in for the answer too! My 503 green wheel has a layer of Hunter green and a layer of black paint.

Re: Steering wheel colors
AFAIK they were cast black and painted. There are threads about how other members have restored theirs.

Re: Steering wheel colors
They were painted. Most were cast in black, but I have seen them cast in turquoise/aqua. The funny thing is, the aqua ones I've had were cast in black and the one I had the was cast in aqua was a gold 50th anniversary wheel. Maybe on some later '68s GM tried out the cast in color they employed in '69-'72.

Re: Steering wheel colors
I'm hoping mine is cast Aqua. Fingers crossed!

Re: Steering wheel colors
Thanks for the replies fellas. I'm going to try some stripper on an inconspicuous spot and see what happens. Where there is a spot that is chipped off it looks to be a green shade.

Re: Steering wheel colors
I'm not sure stripper won't melt the material. Be careful
