Boyd tanks

Whats the take on Boyd Tanks? I'm thinking of ordering one with the stealth fuel pump for my 350 Throttle Body Engine.

Anything I should know on these tanks? Ordering with the box fill flush mount kit as well. Don't plan on rolling it over but should i add that rollover vent?

Anyone have one sitting around that they ordered and didn't use?

Anyone make a dummy fill spout in original location?

Thanks in Advance

Re: Boyd tanks

I bought one recently, although I haven't installed it yet. I went with the in-tank pump because I'm rebuilding an L31 350 that isn't machined for a mechanical fuel pump. I'm also considering moving to fuel injection in the future. I got the rollover vent just because it seems like the smart thing to do. There's some information about the install in the thread below. I went ahead and got the rigid dual fuel line kit from sstubes.com. It took me a while to figure out the type of fittings that these fuel lines are designed to work with. They are called "quick connect". I went with a style of fitting that converts from "quick connect" to -6AN hose, like the Russell 611200 in the attached photos and Vibrant 24902 to connect the hose to the tank. The supply line is 3/8" and the return is 5/16". The 5/16" fittings I ordered for back at the tank are Russell 611250 and Vibrant 26902. I'm using Vibrant 26902 and 26002 to attach to the fuel pressure regulator. The hose is Summit SUM-240603B.

I will be installing a low pressure carb-compatible fuel regulator with a return line port. I'm planning on mounting it on a blanking plate in the spot where the mechanical fuel pump would normally attach to the engine block. I purchased a bunch of fuel line clips from inlinetube.com to attach the rigid lines to the frame rail (CLP133 and CLP170).

For powering the fuel pump, my plan is to attach a 10 gauge wire to the alternator. I will attach it to an inline fuse rated at 30A (Sierra Marine FS45470). I will then route it through one of the empty slots in the firewall bulkhead connector. I'm going to use a Bosch 332209150 relay and a Standard Motor Products FV-7 fuel pump cutoff switch to kill the pump in a collision. I'm also going to use a Holley 12-810 oil pressure switch teed into the port on the rear of the engine and wired to the starter motor similar to what's shown in the schematic below. The 10 gauge wire will pass through the relay and then I'll route it, along with the fuel level sender wire, down through the hole in the back of the cab where the old fuel line went, and back to the tank.

Re: Boyd tanks

I forgot to mention this thread about mounting a dummy gas cap. Check out post #14. I'm planning on copying that idea.

I ordered one of these:

I was slightly disappointed because the one I received was painted black instead of being plated like the one in their photo.

Re: Boyd tanks

I have one for my 67, it's beautiful man. If a gas tank can be dead sexy.. it's a Boyd Welding tank.

Worth every penny.. buy it.

Re: Boyd tanks

I too like the Boyd tank, I purchased the Non EFI tank a couple of years ago, but because I am doing an ls swap,I am now upgrading to the in tank pump with the Aeromotive 340 pump. Aeromotive does not recommend using the C5 corvette “returnless” style filter/regulator with this set up. They recommend supply and return lines, with a regulator closer to the fuel rails.
I went with the roll over vent,( the tank needs a vent anyway)
It’s a little expensive initially, but if you plan on keeping your truck, i think it’s a very nice setup. I would buy it again.

Re: Boyd tanks

I'm actually installing one of these right now. For you guys that have- how is the sending unit wired? There is a terminal post in the middle of the sending unit and a smaller one next to it. Which one does what? Original sending unit was just one wire and I don't recall a ground, but looks like this one has one. Instructions leave much to be desired, but tank looks great.

Re: Boyd tanks

The 67 I bought had a new Boyd's EFI tank included...Aeromotive 340 pump as well
I fabricated a bracket and mounted the regulator to the back of the cylinder head on the driver's side....
I used braided stainless Teflon lined hoses to 3/8" aluminum lines connected inside the frame rail at the back....up to braided lines in the frame rail at the front...then up to the regulator...
mounted the filter (Aeromotive replaceable cartridge)in the frame rail

Re: Boyd tanks

I put the non efi Boyd’s in my 67 and went with the flush mount fill and rollover vent. Also did the supply and return lines from ss tubes. I’m very happy with it all.

Just. Extend your existing sending unit wire back and wire it to the center post. The other post needs to go to a chassis ground, just make a small jumper wire and ground it to the frame. (See pic)

Re: Boyd tanks

I installed one in my truck a few weeks ago and relocated the fuel inlet behind the drivers side tail light. I did not use their installation kit. I am not sure if it would have made it easier or not. The tank is surprisingly heavy! I used the EFI set-up, but I found the pump set-up used on FB for cheap and bought it. I am not a fan of Aeromotive pumps, so that was chucked and a Walbro was installed. You could easily install an EFI pump on the set-up for a carburetor. I have a similar set-up in my car and it works great. The actual tank is the same.

I bought the 2" inlet that comes in from the side. If you go this route, spend the few extra dollars and get the 1-1/2" inlet. Trying to bend that 2" diameter gas hose is ridiculous, but it depends on how you plan on running the inlet tube.

I am using SS flex lines from the tank to the frame, then steel to the front, them a flex to the engine. I have a L83 I am installing.

Good luck!

Re: Boyd tanks

Great information everyone, it's truly appreciated for sure. Now I question Boyd's pump as I want one that will last. Anyone else elaborate on the pumps with the good and bad?
