soft bumper cover repair?

Someone bumper tagged our 09 Yukon and fled so I have a baseball sized divot to fix. It is torn through in a 3" split and just marred the paint otherwise. Considering my insurance deductible, I am just as well to repair it myself instead of filing a 2nd claim in 4 months. Not good for the old premiums.
I did body and paint 45 years ago and things have changed, a lot.
So, I assume I can use fiberglass to reinforce the back side and the split, then use conventional fillers on the outside. What are the suggested refinish products?
Back in the 70s we used a flex agent in painting urethane type bumper filler panels and such. Still required today?
I would most likely spray the whole cover to avoid trying to blend it in.
I have some urethane clear and activator left from a previous job.

Re: soft bumper cover repair?

Correct repair would be plastic welding the tear . Flexible fillers are made for scratches and gouges. New paints don’t need flex agents anymore thats why paintless repairs can be made on panels the paint isn’t brittle like the older paints .

Re: soft bumper cover repair?

Boog, Take that cover off heat the dent hammer it out. Then find some bumper cover repair stuff [think sheetrock mesh tape like] reinforce the backside then fill the outside. Now as far as the paint blend it in there is very similar to applying primer[ cover your spot then go out a little farther each following coat. clear the whole bumper.
Now the question you may want to ask is how far would you drive from Searcy to get some help? you can handle it just ask me questions if you do need help I'll try to keep looking for messages. Jim

Agree with Custom Camper Plastic welder is the way yo go , I bought one that also 140 amp Arc welds , the unit is small and its 110/220 capable ,so if I need to do a small weld repair or temp repair out of reach . I have used it and it plastic welds and arc welds pretty darn good and it was only $57.00 comes with a bag of staples so your ready to plastic weld right out of the box , Its paid for its self 10x over .
