The Fuse is Lit...

Okay, I guess it is time to get this show on the road.

I am building this truck to be my daily driver. I need to try to keep the budget as under control as possible, but I have a hard time letting things be sometimes, ya know?

Yeh, I know you do.

Here is my new girl...

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

First thing I had to do was get her in the garage, got kind of exciting when the already poor brakes went to the floor. I almost remodeled our bedroom closet but got her stopped in time.

Start the teardown...I am pretty good at this part...it is the putting back together that gets me stumped.

Pull the cab and what was left of the bed...

Shes stripped now

By the way, yes I realize there is a very pink bike in my photos, I live with three women... I am just used to pink things in my life.

If it helps, just think of it as a restored Softail.

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

After a little frame cleaning, and a whole lot of reading here, I cut the frame. Thanks to everyone that posted on how they did this. I can't tell you how much I learned.

Actually, I bought the truck in Pittsburgh, KS but when I read the title it said Eureka Springs, AR. I thought it was weird that I drove 6 hours to buy a truck that was originally only 11 miles from my house.

I sold the entire motor to a buddy, but I will check on the breather for you because he may have other plans for it,

That truck is beautiful! It looks like it could be a Cherry Bomb project vehicle the way it sat when you picked it up

Oh I can't wait to go down south to pick up a nice shell!

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

I already posted this in another thread but I picked up a 2005 Sub for $1000.00

It has a 6.0L with the 4L80e, has all the wires and computers, should make for a fun ride. Maybe I will be able to part out the remainder to cover the cost of buying the vehicle. Now that would be a blessing.

Out with the old...

In with the new (well, newer anyway)

I had a buddy that owed me a favor. I was able to get the frontend, rearend (3.42) and the brake setup out of a 1991 Sub he was ready to crush.

I'll try to get some pics of the swap. Thanks for looking

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

Got a little more done.
Got the frontend situated.

Amazing that it bolts up this closely, two holes to drill and two that need some small widening.

Now...about that rearend.

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

cool, keep at it. What was the reasoning on not painting the LCA's with the rest of it? Just going to deal with them later?

Actually the only thing painted is just the top of the frontend. I wanted to make sure the Rustoleum paint was gonna make me happy. I know its not POR-15 or anything close, but it ended up looking nice. I think the best thing about it will be the ability for easy touch up work. IMHO

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

that crossmember looks like it will give you a little more ground clearance , is that correct or does it hang down as low as the original ???

It is actually jacked up in the pic. I may be wrong but I think the clearance may be a little higher but should be close to stock.

I painted my frame with hammered finish rustoleum. Was really happy with how well it covered but I also sanded down and primed everything as well. Like you said, my thinking is that it's a lot easier to touch up spray paint than powdercoat

Well, I think your build looks great, so if that is rustoleum, I think I will be very happy.

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

Thought I would put the TJ jeep springs in..

I had read that they fit very well in the stock location but I was still surprised by how well they fit.

Since I had the heavy duty springs out back, the coils were very thick and the jeep springs were much smaller diameter. That lead to quite a bit of slack between the frame and spring as you can see here...

I am sure that most of the slack would have been taken out when tightened, but I did not see the need of it if I could tighten it some. So, I massaged the coil retainer with a great big hammer.

First I flattened the middle and then around the edges to make it more level

ended up with this

In these pic you can see how that the fit is much better

and final fit looked good as well

As you can see I also took a pic of my high dollar fluid retainment system, if anyone is interested I could hook you up for a small fee

I also have the lowering blocks on and I will try to post some pics of that later.

Hope you like it!

Re: The Fuse is Lit...

Here are the pics of the lowering blocks

I went to my local scrap yard and bought a piece of square tubing that was 14" long ($3.00) and then cut it in half and then measured (two or three times) and drilled holes for the u-bolts.

I had the u-bolts made at a local truck shop, 3/4" rod with 3 1/2" interior width and 10" long. I could have used a shorter length but I want to trim it to size in case of scrub line issues. I also took off the nuts that came with the u-bolts and replaced them with grade 8 nuts that gave me more clearance.

This is what I ended up with. I have never done this before but it went together easy enough and so far has not fell off so I am going to deem it a sucess
