Future gasser '57 chevy

Looking for ideas or suggestions to raise stock front axle 2 or 3 inches for that gasser look.

Thanks,

I am with you, cheapest way and easiest is to block the leafs... IMO

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

Generally not a good idea to use blocks on the front axle, lots of side loading from the steering.

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

I think he is right man, either way shackles or blocks will mess with the steering linkage. I am very new to this but sounds and looks like it would affect steering.

what about adding leafs? my 3/4 ton sits high and has just as beefy leafs in the back as it does in the front.

either way sounds like a new pitman arm would be in order to correct steering issues.

Sorry, A square body guy chiming in on this one. You should be able to find some leaf packs that are the same width but are longer than your current ones. Then just bolt them in place. And, I agree that you would probably need to adjust your steering just like you would with any lift. But that is a way I have seen many vehicle types get some cheap, subtle lift.

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

You can buy a power steering conversion kit and just use the idler arm and steering arm. This shifts the connectin to the top of the King Pin. That will give you about 5". I also went to a later year steering box, Steve

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

Slowed down for awhile because of the winter blues. I finally motivated myself to get going again. I installed a new power brake booster, master cylinder and brake lines. See new pictures!

Got rusted and lazy!

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

I went to the Puyallup Swap Meet and found these goodies for my gasser project truck. Front tires are Coker 5.60x15 and rear tires are Firestone cheaters 8.20x15 with smoothie wheels and spider center caps. What do you think!

Big & Little look!

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

This is the case of one step forward and two steps backwards! Discovered that the frame I was using had been a long bed frame and was shortened to a short bed frame and was cut wrong and the rear end and brackets were moved back 2.5 inches back from the stock location. Did not look right so I rounded up a second stock short bed frame - tore it down - had it sand blasted and repainted chasis black - and refitted with all the parts from the first frame. Progress is slow but moving forward.

Set backs are not fun!

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

I located a donor 1957 chevy truck for the front fenders and hood - made arrangements to have the cab, fenders, hood, battery tray and other pieces sandblasted. I am very happy with the results. We have some rust issues on the inside and outside cab corners and lower fenders which we are going to address on the upcoming weeks.

Forward progress on the move!

Love the engine. I've been toying with the idea of trying to find one for my truck.

Re: Future gasser '57 chevy

Didn't know Edlebrock made heads for 348-409. I've always liked them too. Were they ever available from the factory in pickups in 58-59?? I know the 348 was an option in the cars but we called the truck engines when I was a kid. Big trucks only?? I suspect the HP was a bit more than the 425 advertised too.
