Strut bag question.

Today I was at pick a part, and saw a car where someone converted RE7 bags to strut bags.

For the base he cut off the mounting plate, and used the weld as the mount for his slip collar. Which was about 2 inches long, and supported held the bottom of the bag. The bottom of the bag was sealed with RTV, and I imagine the collar was too.

When I popped the bag up I could see he cut the hole with some large drill bit as it looked to perfect to of been cut.

The bag was under no real tension with the suspension at full droop, and my guess is that it gave him a 3" drop.

The top of the bag was an integration of the strut bearing, a 1/4 thick plate, and the factory plate. Could not get a good look because of the angle, and the strut couldn't be removed with what I brought.

The rear had the springs popped back in, and I guess he made or bought normal brackets to pop in some air bag.

I think the guy who built it had more time then money or was just cheap enough to do it that way. It had to of been on the car a year or so, and my guess the tranny died. So he scrapped the car. The air management was gone, and the stereo with all the speakers. There was a spot that must of held the air management, and the lines all had schrader valves installed.

It obviously works if done right, but is it bad for the struts to have pressure on the outside of their seals? Or is he just waiting for a leak to happen, and that is why they sell bags for the job. The guy obviously put a ton of time into it, and it has me thinking wow. Someone did it, and it works.
