Stepside short bed swap

Hey guys and gals, im hoping to get some useful feedback on this subject...

my 1957 Chevy pickup currently has the bed from a 1991 pickup on it. it fits and it works, but I want to have the correct bed on there. I bought the truck like this a few months ago. The guy who built the truck went the route of the 1991 bed because its was far easier to find and less expensive.

Heres my question: If I remove the fiberglass fenders from my bed and the tail lights and tailgate, can I get away with installing 1957 fenders and steps, and the 1957 tailgate ? i do have a steel box behind the fiberglass fenders. i realize i will have to do some fabrication to swap the tailgate... i just don't want to bother even trying to do this if anyone out there has tried it before and it doesn't come out right.

If i can pull this off, i'd save $1,000 in parts. even more if i could find good used fenders.
