aftermarket tranny x member opinions

I bought one of those "Performance" Square tubed x members from GMC Pauls for my transmission thinking it might be beneficial with my new 421SBC installation.

However sizing it up today for installation I find it is around 1/2 inch to short between the frame rails and the bolt holes do not line up, plus it is not centered for the tranny mount. It is a nice heavy piece however it does not quite match the pic on the website as well......

Now i am thinking of just putting a few welds on my factory x member to reinforce the rivets and then just painting and reinstalling. What do you guys think??
Any benefit over the stock piece for performance and strength????
