So I'm betting the back lash is probably where it needs to be.

I haven't moved the adjustment lock tabs at all sense I've owned the truck.
Yes .Hold the Pinion still. Then move the carrier back and forth. There should be about (0.010 to 0.030") best I remember.
The Pinion housing was removed thou(right).
If so this could change things.

Pinion depth and the ring gear pressure against the ring go hand in hand.
Maybe you got lucky and the pinion is put back just like it came out.

Looks good to me.
Now you can clean it up and paint it while you got it out.

Sweet, hey I really do appreciate you answering all my questions and being straight forward. Not many people like that any more. Well have any color suggestions?

Glad I could Help. A darker shaded color is good. Pink or white will make all the oil leaks show up

Re: Eaton HO72/HO52 vs. 14 Bolt FF

Local junkyard has 1 ton leaf spring 62 Chevy with ho72 and a no spin label on inside of cab most likely 5.14 gear ratio. Can I swap locker or carrier in my 64 3/4 ton that has 4.56 gears with no problems. Was going to just pull out center section . What is the easiest and what is a fair price for center section

Re: Eaton HO72/HO52 vs. 14 Bolt FF

according to this article and other posts I've read, yes, the third members are interchangeable..

https://www.stovebolt.com/techtips/a...Ton%20Upgrade/

the prevailing story on the pinion load bolt is that only early 72 had them but later both 52 and 72 had them..

fair price is difficult to estimate for something somewhat difficult to find, especially locally to avoid shipping..

if I found one within an hour drive radius, I'd give 2-300 for good third with locker..

but someone somewhere is probably selling a locker only for $500 and someone else selling a complete axle for $100

best price gauge is what's it worth to you knowing you can't order one from a catalog anywhere

if it helps at all, I'll send you $25 for the plate in the cab if it's actual plate and not a decal and you can get it out without destroying it

good luck!
