Do you still have a yellow wire running from the starter to the coil/distributor? If you do, and you have the yellow and purple wires swapped, then the yellow wire could be responsible for making your starter motor turn over constantly. I don't think this makes any sense based on what you said about the brown wire, but I thought I'd throw it out there anyway.
