To tighten a tilt column?
Ok. I’ve searched and searched, but couldn’t find any threads on a “How to” to tighten a 70-72 Tilt-Column.
I did a search on YouTube and found one on a Square body column, and it seemed pretty simple to do. Remote wheel, the hub, and turn signal controls. Then its just a matter of tightening the mounting screws ( that tend to loosen over time), and put it back together. I was wondering if the two versions are anything alike, mechanically speaking Any thoughts? |

Re: To tighten a tilt column?
The turn switch needs to come off, and the collar that covers it. Then pull the tilt spring and pivot pins. Then the intermediate shaft and lower bearing.
....Then you can get to the 4 bolts that actually get loose.

Re: To tighten a tilt column?
Seriously? You are talking about inside the column? Is there a blown up schematic picture, or a. Idiot of this procedure?
The reason I ask is, I don’t want to get into something that I’ll end up messing up and then have to buy a new column. Thanks for the response |

Re: To tighten a tilt column?
Dragging up an old thread, but i have the same question. I recently bought an early 70's van tilt and it is loose in the mechanism as well. It there a worn part that should be replaced? or does it just need an adjustment?
Is there a good thread on this subject, did some searches, but nothing i could find. |

Re: To tighten a tilt column?
You will need a method to pull the tilt pins. Typically is is just tightening the bolts. A little green loctite thread locker will help it from returning. only use enough to see it on the bolt.
Truck will seem to drive like new when it's repaired. Rick |

Re: To tighten a tilt column?
Thanks guys, i watched some of the 73 and newer column videos. Took mine all apart and found the 4 bolts had backed out, tightened and re-did it all. ITs mint like new now.

Re: To tighten a tilt column?
I all but forgot I started this thread, and thank those who responded.
As it works out, my good friend/neighbor has a Jeep shop, and take a guess where AMC procured the tilt columns they put in the CJ-5/7? He’s got the specialty tools to tighten my column, I just have to make the time to go do it. |
