What is wrong my truck.

Whenn i hit it to get on the highway or just punch it in town to show them ford guys whose boss. It is like stalling out on me. Like it is starving for gas or that it is getting to much. Spitting and sputtering all the way up the onramp. What do i do. I wish some of you guys that are always so helpful lived close by. By the way in my birthday post i said that i may have to sell it well my wife told me otherwise. She said " We will get by there isn't any reason for you to give up that truck." GOD I LOVE THAT WOMAN!! Then she starts handing my my birthday gifts all of which are tools for working on my truck.

And here is a pic of the wheels i am buying tell me what you guys think...

Check your accelerator pump, make sure you ahve a "good" SQUIRT of fuel into the carb and not just dribbles.check this with the engine OFF.

Re: What is wrong my truck.

The above advice is good however I would do a compression test. It may be time for a valve job. Check compression in all 8 holes.

Re: What is wrong my truck.

i got and 84 that will do the same thing,,but it likes to eat the fuel filters,,still have not figured out why,,but about once a year it will just collapse the fuel filter up in the carb...i'd check the fuel filter first..

Re: What is wrong my truck.

Im big on fuel filters, check them first, it is the simpliest. For those guys who havent driven your trucks for a long time, it may be wise to flush out your tank. As gas evaporates, it leaves a clear lacquer on the side of the tank, and guess where it ends up at. you can not see the stuff in the filter, but try to blow though it.

Re: What is wrong my truck.

fuel filters both at the carb and IN THE TANK
collapsed dryrotted rubber fuel lines
improper gap to plugs or points
old sparkplug wires
leaking dryrotted vaccume lines
improper timing/ streached timing chain
dirty air filter
malfunctioning choke

a few things to check

My 6 did that until I replace the vacuum advance in the distributor.

Those wheels look slick. Where are you getting them from, if you don't mind my asking?

This is really easy, but you need a compression tester. I havn't bought one in ages, but (and correct me) $20-$25 bucks ought to get a decent one. There are two types, one that threads into the sparkplug hole, and the other has a rubber kind of a nozzle looking thing on the end that you hold tightly into the sparkplug hole. This type requires either a helper or a remote started button. With either type, the point is to have the motor turn over a few times and pump up guage on the tester. Whichever type you get, there would be instructions with it on how to use it.

Re: What is wrong my truck.

you could also have the smaller sending units that were for the sixes so when you try and gun it it will starve its self of gas because the line is too small

Re: What is wrong my truck.

what kind of carb are you running? i'd check for vacuum leaks and proper float adjustment after you've done the aforementioned things. good luck.

Re: What is wrong my truck.

Call me an old fool but I would spend my money on getting that truck running good and making sure it's safe to drive before putting dress up items on it. You'll have plenty of time to make it pretty after you are happy with the way it runs.
