fuel cap loose message

my 05 silverado z71 with the 5.3.only has 24k miles and no noticeable loss of power or fuel milage. lately it's displayed the message "fuel cap loose".or something similar i can't remember the exact wording.it's done it twice, both times just a few minutes after leaving the house.and both times i checked it.it was tight.now, after the latest episode the check engine light came on steady.of course the truck went off warranty earlier this summer.as i'm not able to get it somewhere to get the code read for a few day's,i was wondering if anyone has had a similar expeirence?

Re: fuel cap loose message

I think you'll find any car since OBDII sets an error code/warning message if it's loose. Are you turning gas cap past tight so it "clicks". If yes, then it's probably failing. If you have a friendly local inspection station they might check the cap for you to tell you if it is losing pressure.

the cap would be the cheapest place to start.i read that somewhere,i suppose if it's not holding pressure the check engine light could stay on?

Re: fuel cap loose message

Our 2006 Impala kept getting the same message and it was not the cap. Some solenoid vent valve had to be replaced. They did a "smoke check" to find the leak.

Re: fuel cap loose message

well,i went and bought a new cap.check engine light went off within about 5 mile's after.we drove about a 150 mile's round trip down to seaside, oregon.check engine light never came back on so,i'm keepin the ole fingers crossed.it almost seem's too simple to be true.i usually don't have that kinda luck.normally turn's into a 500 buck show.

Re: fuel cap loose message

My 03 Yukon threw the check engine light for the evap code. When I had gotten gas, the cap felt as tight as it would go, but it had gotten hung up on the strap that keeps the cap from getting lost. Not being used to owning something this knew, I didn't even think about not hearing the clicks...Now I make absolutely sure I actually listen for the clicks
