10 Bolt Rear End Question

I’m in need of your help with my 10 bolt rear end. Today I tried to take out the axles by removing the 8 mm bolt that holds the pin in the middle of the spider gears. A course with my luck the damn bolt was broke ¾ of the way in. With my limited knowledge I tried to drill a hole in the broke bolt and use a counter sink to pull it out. Well I had no luck with that but I did accomplish screwing up the threads yeah me. LOL… There is no way of pulling the center gears out as the axles are still in the rear end. So what do I do from here? I need your help.

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

I'm gonna say no. I had the same thing with a 14bold that I got, but I had better luck. I would say try again, but make sure that your not drilling the treads, and go a bit deeper with the drill so your easy out can get a better grip.

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

Do you have a 90 deg. drill? One of those short head ones for tight areas. Thats what you might need.

Something like that.

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

I have had some luck using a sharp pick to unscrew the stub of the bolt. I have had to tap the bolt with a punch to loosen it. PB balster and patience will be your watch words

Good Luck Jay

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

have you tried removing the pass side Carrier Cap to get on it straight for drilling?? usually works.

OR,

hit pin with Very large hammer and drive carrier pin out breaking holding pin, This will usually destrol carrier....
We only do this hammer meathod or torch if carrier is junk anyway

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

Does the bolt go all the way throught the carrier pin? The bolt broke roughly 3/4 of the way down on the threads.

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

The threads I think are only about 3/4 of an inch. So if you still have most of them after you punch the pin out I think you'll be ok.

I have had good luck breaking the pin with a good solid blow to the spider pin holding the side gears, it seems soft and it sheared the pin easy and did not distort the carrier.
Sometimes you just have to do it !!!

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

If the pin won't come out the carrier is no good anyway . I got lucky

Re: 10 Bolt Rear End Question

Thanks for all the help guys. Hotrod 80 the pictures rock. I think I have pretty much destroyed the threads and I'm no closer to gettting that damn bolt out. I have a guy who is going to sell me one of his spare 10 bolts for 60 bucks complete. So I think I'm going to go that direction. I know the wife will be happy since she won't have to hear all the curse words and tools flying across the garage. LOL... Again thanks everyone.
