Cleaning Chrome Rims

I have set of chromes rims with some rust. I thought about using a copper steel wool pad from walmart and wd40. I think the wheels are made US Wheel. There called Chrome Blade Steel Wheels. If anybody has any better ideas please post your advice or comments. They 16.5 8 lug wheels.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

good links but most of that stuff is for alum. I don't think it work so well on rusty chrome steel. I'd try the steel wool, we usually se a brillo pad and water to get the bad stuff off then wax the heck out of it with mother's chrome polish. Mother's actually takes some rust off when you rub on it awhile.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

turtle wax chrome sucks, sorry but that's MO, I've tried it side by side with mother's and mother's whips is butt hands down. It removes rust better and easier, and it shines it better.

As for brillo if that's the best you got steel wool aint gonna do much then. I'd continue to use brillo pads or steel wool, I would think more would or should come off then what it did.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

coke does lil' as I said on fsc but I know a good one, naval jelly, the stuff eats rust, and would be first on my list. I forgot about the stuff but I had some buddies use it on a chrome bumper that was rusted bad and turned out like a new one.

If not then here's a question I know you were looking for some 16.5 tires because of these wheels, thing is do you have all four wheels? If not I might look into getting new wheels period that'll cost more money I know but if you get a common size like a 16 instead of 16.5 then you can get tires cheaper and save money. if you only got 2 you're gonna have to buy at least 2 anyways, might as well buy 4. Summit has them cheap, us wheel makes them and yes they are called blade wheels, and cragar also makes them they are called super spoke by cragar. Summit and jegs are the cheapest on them. I was gonna buy the same setup basically but the star ones for my truck in a 16x8 and they were only $70-$75 a piece I think.

Yes, I have all 4 wheels. The other 2 still have tires on them. But the tires are junk/no good.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

When I was a kid we used to use aluminum foil to remove rust from chrome handlebars and rims on bikes.Takes the rust right off, then polish to shine.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

Someone recommended Unbelievable Metal Polish. They said it would take rust off and scratches out. Where does one get the Unbelievable Metal Polish at? Will the mothers power metal polish work then?

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

s.o.s. and brillo pads are basically the same as steel wool and I've used em forever it works great, the soap helps lube them and stuff too, but then again if steel wool aint doing it, brillo pads aint gonna for sure. You can get steel wool alot rougher then a brillo or sos so, steel wool is the more aggresive way to go and what you need for sure.

just an fyi dav, but nevrdull is for removing stuff from chrome, I got a can of it and was reading it.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

I bought all kinds of cleaning stuff for these wheels, turtle wax polish/scratch remover, nevrdull, superclean wheel cleaner, and mother chrome polish. I'll try them in all in a different rusty spot to see which one does better than the other.

Re: Cleaning Chrome Rims

wheel cleaner aint gonna do squat other then clean dirt off them, maybe grease or grime.

mothers chrome will take some off, nevrdull not sure on rust but it may shine them back up after the steel wool dulls em out. turtle wax scratcxh remover, doubt it does anything, I got it and tried it on my polished center caps and it did nothing.
