Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Jonathon the thing you are not looking at in my opinion is the reputation that Jerry and Gary have vs. everyone else. Their reputation and knowledge of buyers is what bring the big money for their trucks. I have been present when Jerry purchased a truck built with all of his parts for $21,000 loaded on his rollback and sold the very same truck for $34,000 with out doing anything but loading it and moving it literally down the road. This is for no reason but his reputation and knowledge of buyers. I wish you luck but this market is like everything else associated with sales, it hard to compete with the heavy hitters being a little guy. I completely understand whre you are coming from
and I wish you well but dont over extend and get hurt trying to get what they get for theirs. Again just my opinion. Harold

I do appreciate that thought. I actually had posted that I do realize their reputation has a lot to do with the prices they get.

I'm not expecting to get 60-70K for a truck when restored.

I do think I can get good money based on the quality of the build. And I will definitely make mention in my For sale ad that I used many parts supplied by CSM in the build (including some that were intended for his and his son's personal vehicles that are even a step above their normal stuff)

I recently watched the nice 72 super that had no documentation on being a true factory swb bb and looked pieced together on ebay. Seller had limited feedback also. Had many over-restored items including an a/c box painted to match the firewall, polished parts, and had been lowered with billet rims.

Got up to 48K with multiple bidders but didn't hit reserve. I think the truck I'm building will be worth somewhere in that range when completed.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

I would really like to know more about the motivation of people that drop $45K or more on these. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad these trucks are fetching the money, but given the numbers of these that were made, it's not rarity, not performance...

If that eBay truck bid up tp $45K, I see no reason why yours wouldn't get that or more.

hey Jonathan, i think your build can fetch some major green backs, with the NOS parts that you're putting in it.I've seen some repo parts at Charlotte like reverse light housing, they are nothing like the ones that come in our trucks, that say Made in USA,you have alot of parts that say that.Keep on Truckin''

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

Jonathan, just create a file with all of the NOS parts, keep all the part number labels...even the NOS boxes/packages if you can. That'll sure help. Nothing is impossible given the right buyer. I know this off of my experience in selling comic books. Rarity and seller rep are certainly main contributing factors. However, there are those little 'free radicals' known as the right time, place, and buyer. With that considered and a build like yours, I think you'll do fine with the truck you have. But it'd sure be nice to get that other truck, huh

Jason's working on the cab but I'm going to sell this one. Have a true SWB BB super I'm planning to get in NC now....all the parts I've gathered will go on it so it's just the cab and frame that will be different basically...

Planning to document everything and having the other truck to start with will be the biggest plus in my book!

Ah, so you decided to get it. Well, what's the scoop on that? When do you get it, what kind of shape is it, etc. Inquiring minds want to know.

You guys know as much as I do right now I'm waiting for the current owner to get some other things moved to get to it. I do know it's in good shape and fully loaded with excellent documentation....

might be a few weeks or more before I can get it though...

until then I'm going to be working on the current cab and frame and get them as nice as possible to sell...

Might be a BIG change of direction on this project soon (people who know me and my builds will NOT be surprised )

I'm still going to build the truck and it will be a SWB BB Super.....but might not be this truck. Looking at a truck in NC that is a TRUE SWB BB Super with even more options than this truck had. Also has the correct 402/400 with it. So I am leaning towards selling this frame/cab and purchasing the other truck.

I'm going to get the rust repaired in the cab and freshen up the frame a little and see if I can sell it for what I have in it....then pick up the other SWB super....

I just feel to do this build right...with all the nice and NOS stuff I have and to get top dollar I should get a TRUE SWB BB Super with number's matching block, frame & cab....

Opinions?
For all the money and time you will have into it you are doing the right thing getting a numbers matching SWB BB truck to start with. The matching numbers make a huge difference at the high end of the price scale.

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

No word from the guy with the documented swb bb. Right now I'm honestly looking for a driver. Have had many times recently I've needed/wanted to have a truck to use...

On the sanding discs for the grinder, I got several styles online from lehigh valley abrasives. They are about 1/2 price of similar ones I've gotten in the store as long as you get a few at a time to combine the shipping...

Re: 1972 Cheyenne Super Short Fleet Big Block build!

I got my head out from under my truck long enough to read most of this thread...I see you have stopped working on it in hopes of a numbers swb truck. How about making this into your daily and get the true shorty for restore resale?
The project looks great so far.

Also, Jerry Brown started this resto biz in the early 80's when people thought he was nuts to restore one when they were still abundant. He knows everybody, and everybody knows him. If a guy is looking for a restored truck, Jerry can sell it site unseen because of his rep. That's also why he gets the big money. Btw i bought my blaze from JB long time ago. Traded a rust free 4x4 driver blaze for it(and a couple of dollars). If you ever have the chance to visit his shop, it's amazing. I spent two days their, he finally told me to leave so he can get back to work.
