Question Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

My 77 Sport is original and has never been hit. Has anybody ever tried
to get replacement decals for this model? Scared to take anywhere for
fear of decal damage. Comments Please.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

We need more pics of this truck!

I think the only good option is to have a graphics place make them up.

If you can find any NOS decals, they'll likely be so old they won't stick anymore.

I never replaced the stripes when I painted mine back in '96, because no graphics places would touch the job, and my only option was having them painted on the truck, which meant Big Bucks, which was impossible for a 16 year old.

I have come across various NOS Decals on Ebay from time to time. at the least you could use them as a template for having new decals made.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

I have a 79 and 80 Sport that are restored ;I had the stripes made up by a computer graphics shop that does complete wraps so the stripes were not a problem;I had them make the patterns and color layouts from my other 80(original paint and stripes) and a nos stripe that i had.
I have a 78 Sport(454/bucket seat) truck that I am restoring and will have to have the stripes made from picture as I am unable to locate an original stripe truck.I also have an 81 Sport restoration project and an original paint/stripe 76 Sport.

Your black 77 Sport with original paint/stripes is a very rare truck;I have not seen an original one for 15 years....they were quite popular back in 77 (they were actually a COPO option like the 427 camaros)but VERY few survive in their original form ...I have run across a few but none with the original paint.

The stripes from GM were very expensive so any that were repainted were not restriped....at least none that I have seen. And the types of drivers that purchased short bed sport trucks often ran them hard so repaints and wrecks were common.

It is good to know there is at least one out there ...if I pick up a restorable 77 Sport I will contact you if that is ok an get some measurements.

I know what you mean about taking it out....we have a black 79 with 600 original miles on it ...may be the lowest mile 79 around....we try and put a few miles every year on it and I am always concerned some clown in a minivan will bump into it.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

Thanks for all the nice responses and compliments. I guess we will have
to be super careful when we do have it on the road. Yes you are correct
as it was a COPO truck. As I recall it was mainly a COPO for the interior.
(Red Rug in a Scotsdale). If info is ever needed I will be glad to help.
Enclosed is a picture of the LS9 as ordered.(Believe it to be last year
Chevy offered a leaded gas engine) Larry

P.S. If you look closely at the firewall you can see the original markings by the people
who assembled the truck in Janesville WI.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

The COPO covered the Chevy Sport option which included the stripe package and certain mandatory color and option choices.

In 1976 it was 9G4 ;in 77 it was 9J8(that should be on your spid sticker)
From 78 to 81 it was RPO Z77

All the Sport/Street Coupes appear to be based on Scottsdale/Sierra Grande level trucks but with carpet ,grille and stripe upgrades

80SPORT:

Thanks for added info. I'm still looking to buy an assembly manual for
the Chevy 77 PickUp. I see where Classic Chevrolet Parts in Oklahoma
City is offering A/M for 47-72 Chevy PickUps. Have you ever seen any-
body offer them for 1977's? Thanks in Advance

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

80SPORT,
I bought this last year from a dealer...obviously not in a condition to actually use it but would work for patterns. It is 1978 Sport and the same color as my Mom's 78. I planned to get a shop to reproduce them, so maybe were can work together on them.

Take care,

Barry

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

Amazing what is still out there

I would have a professional mount it on an aluminum sheet and the the sign guys could copy it...you can get the sizing and colors for the whole truck from that.

the only part you would have to guess at would be the chevy sport letters on the box side panel

the compound 4 speed and no air is cool on a Sport. not sure I have seen that before. Mine is also a 1977 regular gas 454 (not a sport, obviously)

Yes it is a unique truck. I ordered it w/o Power Steering but with Power
Windows! I kinda new I would turn it into a judged/show truck when I
ordered it. I wanted a very "clean" small block w/o all the clutter. By the
way rear end is 12 bolt 3.73 Posi. (KBM) Code I believe.
Larry

P.S. Your truck looks very nice. Wish I could have got a 454 in the Sport but it was not offered.

The last statement I made got me thinking. (That's dangerous) I can't
remember if the 454 was ever offered or was put on hold for some reason
when I ordered it. I do recall that the PA6 Styled Wheels where on hold
but finally came through. Perhaps 80SPORT can tell us if the 454 was a
RPO on the 77 Sport. Thanks again. Larry

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

As far as I know the 454 would have been available on a 77 Sport;most options other than mandatory Scottsdale and restricted colors were available on the Sports and the 454 was available in the 1/2 ton until 79.

I have seen a factory 454 Sport in a 1976 and I have a 78 factory 454 Sport.

But the only way to be sure is to have an SPID from a 77 Sport with a 454.

Various options would be put on hold...sometimes just at one plant....if there was a supplier issue or more demand than forecast

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

Thanks for the kudos. the best thing about it is that it is a good as it looks. It runs great. i have had it 3 years and have had no mechanical issues. the AC even holds a charge.

weird order options are interesting to me. My truck was a one-owner when I got it. It was ordered by the PO. It is a Bonanza (carpet but no headliner, nor carpet on the doors) with PW/PL (first year) tilt and cruise with air. had only an AM radio but he ordered the big block and the turbo 400. It cost over $7,000, but he could not spring for the Silverado package, though it has the chrome grill added and is two tone.

Doesn't surprise me at all. That's the beauty of back then, when you could pick and choose options as you saw fit.

My dad would always order a Scottsdale rather than a Silverado, so that he could get the uplevel grille but rubber floor mat, manual locks and windows, no air, AM radio only but with the largest powertrain available.

I am my father's son (lol) and used that as a starting point when I would order my trucks as well...

Yes a very nice plant. I even took a tour there with the local Junior College
back around 2000. Lot's of nice Chevrolets where made there including my
friends 57 Chevrolet Bel Air!! It was a very old plant though.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

My first brand new truck was a 1977 black chevysport. I ordered here in Reno, Nv. Built in Fremont, Ca. Black K10, 350/350 Scottsdale, red vinyl, rubber floor mats and Tach cluster. Couple of years later I took the stripes off. Sold it in 1981. My dad bought a 1976 chevysport new. He has since passed on and I have it. Wish I still had the 77 too. Nice looking truck Larry, brings back memories.

Found some pictures of my old Chevy Sport.

Have you found anyone to make new stripes or maybe a part # for the original stripes?

Have not tried yet and have no part#'s. My GM parts catalog show the
part #'s for the 1978 sport decals. If ever needed will try to go to a
computer graphics shop as indicated on previous post. Thanks for the
pictures of you neat truck. Looks almost like mine except for the roll bar
and the factory side rails. Enclosed is picture my truck.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

My dad had a '76 4X4 Sport when I was a kid, it was Blue with white stripes, 350/4bbl and 3 speed. My brother rolled it when he was in High School. I miss that truck and it had items I have never seen again. I remember the door locks were a 3 piece design with little wood accents. I want to build another one after my Cameo is done! I will post pics as soon as I can find them.

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

Back in 1986 I had a 1977 Chevy Sport like the one above but in a standard shortbed. Black swb Scottsdale, red interior, white rally rims, red, orange blue, purple stripes down the side and down the bottom. When I got it it had a 454/th400 in it and always thought it was orginal but never could confirm it. I have searched and searched and cant find any pics of it but I do have a couple VHS tapes with a few minutes of the truck if it helps. The first one is the day I got it and my redneck dad taking the trailer ball off the truck and then a year or so later when I was replacing the blown bbc motor with a sbc. In the second video my redneck dad can be heard in the background saying how nice of truck it "used to be" before I tore it all apart.

I later traded the truck for a v8 vega drag car and the new owner stripped it all down and painted it dark blue. We were dumb kids back then and I didnt have a clue how rare that truck was when I got it at 17 years old. My dad has now passed away and I so cherish that few minutes of video of him and me and that truck. I no longer have a VCR to even play the tapes but have been wanting to get the tape transfered to digital media. If it would help you for the placement of the decals let me know and I will get it transfered and load it up on u-tube or something....

Re: Decal Replacement/77 Chevy Sport?

This truck was the black sport with the same striping as the ones above originally. It was torn down and the restore "started" when I met them back in '94. I didn't know what the truck looked like originally until after it was painted and we were putting it back together. If I had only known, maybe I could have talked them into restoring to stock. Another thing, this truck came with an aluminum wheel, Western maybe?
