Initial start up

Went to fire my small block up today after a rebuild. The motor sat a while so I put some oil in the spark plug holes and turned it a few rotations. Also pre oiled with a drill through the distributor drive until I had oil coming through the push rods. Motor fired up and ran nicely for a minute or so and then lugged out. I pulled the spark plugs and they had oil on the tips. Think I over did the oil in the cylinders?

I was going to clean the plugs off and try again... any other suggestions?

I'd say you're probably right. Give it a shot after cleaning/drying. Priming the oil pump is probably all that was necessary unless it sat for a LONG time, but no harm done. Better safe than grenaded.

If it's a flat tappet camshaft... make sure you have the proper break in oil or break in additive. Also... when it fires... you need to get it up to 2,000 to 2,500 rpm's as soon as possible and leave it there for at least 20 to 30 minutes. This ensures the cam and lifters wear in properly and you wont lose a cam...

Thanks for the quick reply, really want to hear this thing run, especially after that little tease!

I do have the break in additive... Think it would help to turn it over a few times before I put the plugs and dist back in?

No. I rebuilt mine twice and learned the hardway, as few turns as possible before you get it to that breakin period. I put myself through a lot of grief. If it were me, clean it, fire it and bring it up to break in RPM right away.
