Why do you drive your truck?

So my son asked me why I drive my 68 instead of a car with better gas mileage or a new truck like my wife's F250 Diesel Cowgirl Cadillac? I actually had to think a little. I told him:

1. I like driving something I can work on.
2. It takes me back to when I was younger.
3. No payment covers the cost in gas.
4. It gives me something to tinker on.
5. I like the feeling of driving something I have "made my own."
6. It's just plain cooler than the new trucks.
7. The quality is better. (Performance may be another story but there are no computers")

It's definitely not for the resell value because I doubt I could get back what I have put in it. And even with high gas prices I feel like I deserve to drive it. I have earned it in a way and it feels like the engineers designed a truck that fits all of my personal specifications and preferences. They got it almost all correct. Closer than any other truck has even come close to.

Lastly - It doesn't cost the equivalent of a small house in Idaho.

Why do you drive yours?

(I'm sure this has come up in the past but his question really made me think.)

Yep, I'm 16 all over every time I get behind the wheel and smoke the tires. And that was a LONG LONG time ago

I drive mine because ive had it since I was 12 (27 now) and never thought about owning another pickup. I own and drive several other trucks but they are all 2 ton or bigger.

Re: Why do you drive your truck?

I've never owned a truck, but had a Wrangler for a while that I bought new in 87. I've always favored wagons. The wife has always wanted one and I'm tired of begging & borrowing friend's trucks. We started looking at 73-87 trucks assuming they would be easier to acquire cheaply, but soon found that the 67-72 are just better looking and not overly expensive. We have negotiated the purchase of a 69 Longhorn and given time to get the cash together (we were just in the research phase... but the truck is beyond perfect for us).

Looking forward to getting greasy and being able to haul what I want... WHEN I want

I'm old enough to remember when Chevy changed body styles in '67. I was only 8 or 9 years old but I thought they were way cool then and I think their way cool now. I think the 71-72s are the best looking trucks ever built!

Thanks, It's got an 89 L98 tuned port 5.7 engine, Turbo 400 trans with gear venders OD unit, and 4:10 gears. The wife made a comment on the way home from the test drive that it was just like the end of the old cartoon "One Cab's Family" The fastest/sportiest car she's ever driven is a 2.8 V6 Cavalier

They are the cleanest, but I think I'm growing partial to the 67-68 GMC front ends.

Well, I don't drive it enough, but when I do it feels so cool to be driving a piece of Americana.....history, as it were. And ya, back to high school....same truck.

Re: Why do you drive your truck?

I drive my truck because it's way cooler than the mustangs and hondas that other kids drive to school. I feel like I actually care about my truck, rather than it being an instrument to get from point A to point B. I use it to haul my bass rig around (those cabinets are heavy as lead and there's no way it's fitting in the back seat of a civic!) and it's fun to drive. Most comfortable thing I've driven, hands down. Sure the steering is shot and it goes numb after about 50 mph but the thrill of having a 350 rev up is enough to turn some heads at school. (beats the ricers' fat 4" exhaust for their four bangers )

Re: Why do you drive your truck?

I drive mine because there's no way I'm going to spend 30 thousand + on a new truck! Mines almost new (because I replaced pretty much every part on it) and it cost me less than ten grand and it actually gains value every year instead of losing value every year! Sure it's not as smooth riding as a new one but who cares, it cost a LOT less to own than a new one!

Re: Why do you drive your truck?

I drive mine because Dennis Hopper rigged a bomb in it to explode if I go slower than 50mph! That and I know where and why the dents are in it, why I had to buy it back after sold it, and why I spent $8,000 on motor, trans, driveline, rear end, lowering kit, and disc brake conversion. Because I have contracted a mental illness that started in high school that makes me spend too much money on a truck that I will never get back out of it. In all honesty money wise, this is only slightly better than owning a boat. If only I had the money to do this back in high school...but then I'd probably have killed myself in this thing back then!!

Good judgment comes from experience, and experience, well......that comes from bad judgment.

1968 Chevy C-10 "Longshot": Bought used from my Uncle George in 1994 and proceeding to beat the hell out of it for 4 years. Sold it. Bought it back, dumped an ungodly amount of money into it since then.

I drive my trucks because I Love Them Both. Also I spend all my time driving a gas saver around during the week because I drive a lot for work. So it's fun to hop into one of the Truck's on the weekend and blow off some steam, rubber, smoke, boost and all that good stuff.

To me there is nothing more satisfying than pulling up in my heavy pig at a light, looking over at a light unsuspecting sports car while he thinks he's got it the whole time, and then leaving him where he's sitting. Then him pulling up at the next light with his tail tucked between his legs and realizing that he never even had a chance, PRICELESS!!!!
