'60-'63 cab mounts

seems like I read somewhere on here that there is a difference the cab mounts for a '60-62 cab and the '63 cab, is that accurate or are they all the same? I'm getting ready to start this '62 dually project and would like to keep the cab swap as simple as possible.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

Yes....the original factory mounts for the 62 are square and smaller. From what I've seen the reproductions are all the same for 60-66. The 63 up mounts are round and a little thicker. I can get pics tonight of the difference as I put some 61 mounts on the fleetside when I mounted the cab to move it up from SC a few months ago. The 60-62 mounts will fit the later model trucks, but are a little shorter in height.

I just ordered 2 complete sets for both my 63's, one from performance energy (ebay special for $30 NIB) and a set from classic industries for around $50. Both look identical to each other other than color.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

the only diff i saw was you need to get new bolts for the front as the 63-66 are to short.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

Hmmmm....most of my experience is with 63's although I've had 61 and 64 parts trucks. Mike & I bought a 21K mile 61 for parts. All parts on the truck were is great shape due to a t-bone on the passenger side of the cab a long time ago...long story short...tons of oem low mileage parts. When I pulled the cab I retained the cab mounts which were square and in excellent shape. All part #'s still visible on the rubber. I took them with me when we got the 63 fleetside a few months back w/longer bolts as they are 1" different than the 60-62 mounts. Some of the original 63 mounts were located while there. But I used the 61 mounts as it was a full & complete set. The 61 mounts I had were noticeable shorter than the 63's. I can only account for my experiences though.

I'm pulling the 61 mounts off tonight as I have a set of new 63 mounts to install. I'll get pics of what I pull off for reference. I know the 61 mounts I had were correct based off the GM number stameped into them. The 61 was a St. Louis truck if it makes any difference and I don't think the truck was ever driven enough to compress them. Pics of what I have you just be easier to show.

Here is a file pic from the forum showing the difference in bolt lengths. The old bolts are 60-62 and the 63-66 are the shorter ones.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

It's been too many years to remember the details, but I tried to replace my original 1960 body mounts with the generic replacements and they didn't come close to working. They were a completely different design, so I had to go back and reinstall my originals.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

Thanks for the info, very helpful! We did replace the cab mounts on my '56 many moons ago, seems like it was some nuts and bolts and a few hockey pucks with a metal sleeve insert. This is my first 60-66 but I imagine the mounts are fairly similar.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

1963c-10--you are correct about the mounts. just pulled my old ones out of the box and they are about 1/2 where the new urethane ones are around 1" (15/16) so by using the 63 up mounts would throw the front and bed lines off? my org had some shims also. now on your 61 parts tk did it have pads under the cross sills? my bed did not have any. might have been removed at sometime? so i guess i use my old mounts-----

yes, cab swap, my cab is really rough and replacing it is the easiest route for me.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

IIRC the rear mounts will line up but the front mounts are farther apart on the 60-62. You would have to move the mounting holes on the cab floor(easiest) or replace/ modify the frame mounts. Good luck, Bo

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

I have a long wheel base 60 that I'm wanting to convert to a short bed....I have a 63 to 66 style frame...is it going to be difficult to make the swap and what all do I need to swap around or move?

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

The first thing to do is check with your local DMV and make sure you have what you need to make the frame swap legal. That is having a frame with a different VIN than the cab.

The front cab mounting holes on the '60-'62 cabs ar farther apart, side to side, that on the '63-'66's. All that is needed is to drill new holes for the front mounting bolts, farther inboard. If you want to get detailed, also move the recessed washers from the old holes to the new holes. The bottom of the cab is already shaped correctly. You will need the '63-'66 bumpers as your '60 bumpers won't mount up. You didn't say if the frame was a rolling frame or not. If not, you will need a '63-'70 differential and either an original front suspension, or take this opportunity to convert to discs up front.

The mounting locations on your '60 bed will not line up on the '63-'66 frame. You can either modify your bed cross sills or change them for '63-'66 pieces.

Then there is the shortening of the frame. That can be a lengthy discussion itself. If you need more info and pics of that let me know. There should also be something in the '60-'66 FAQ index on frame shortening.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

Sorry Gargoyle.....I caught the cab swap part but thought the point in question was using different cab mounts for different years cabs during a swap.

Im only aware of the newer (63-66) style mounts being made for the 60-66 trucks. I was able to pull the front mounts of yesterday....forgot to take pictures. They are square and I'll get a measurement on the thickness tonight, but its around 3/4" thick.

Also noticed that the mounts I ordered from classic parts are made by Energy Suspension also.

Re: '60-'63 cab mounts

the thick ones go between the cab and the mounts and the thin ones go under the support? I think i marked mine wrong----------if thats the case the 63-66 one's will be just fine.
