Not sure what kind of bell housing and clutch setup you have. IIRC, a 1960 will have a hydraulic clutch line with the clutch fork on the PS of the bell.

I really like T5 transmissions and they are affordable. The complications arise when you want to keep the original cable speedometer operational. A V8 Camaro T5 has the best gearing for our trucks with a 2.95 1st gear and 0.63 OD for highway cruising but the 0.63 OD may be too tall for low HP - low torque engines.

Many will swap in an S10 T5 and they all seem to like them. They usually have a 4.03 1st gear and a 0.72 5th gear but some have a 0.86 5th gear. It will also depend on what your rear differential is. A 0.72 OD gear works best with a 3.73 rear and the 0.86 works best with a 3.42 OD gear.

I wanted to stay with a shifter, so the T5 is my choice. The 700R4 is the best choice for the AT guys, but I know nothing about the 700R4.

Tell us more about your engine, rear differential, rear tire diameter and what type of driving you plan to do.

If you want to put an auto trans behind your 235, I believe you will need an adapter plate since the bellhousing bolt pattern is different. If you don't get more info here, I would suggest checking on stovebolt.com or inliners.org forums. I have no experience with that so I will leave it at that.
