What brand mufflers did hot rodders use back in the 60's - 70's

I am trying for that retro one step up from rat rod look of a 60's hotrod. Being just 30 I have no clue what was popular backin that era. Which muffuler and/ or exhaust setup would be the era correct one? I want it to sound and look cohesive as a 60's hot rod.

Thrush was popular along with a bunch of no-name cherry bomb muffers.

Smithy's was also a popular brand ... may have been a regional thing, but I hear my dad talk about those occasionally.

Opinions are a dime a dozen and mine is ,

"Hands down, Thrush !!"

I had a pair on my 65 Impala SS 327/300 HP w/ fac. 4-spd. Dual exhaust with the Thrushes. Still have a pair on my 57 2Dr. Sedan, 4-spd, '57 GM dual four intake with Carter WCFB 4 BBL's and Thrushes on 2 1/2" dual exhaust exiting out behind rear bumper. Deep, mellow tone til I get on it. Then those Thrushes really TALK to ya' ! May have to bid on the ones from the Ebay link just to have another set. Go with Thrush and you will be happy.

Again, Opinions are dime a dozen and this is mine.

My dad used to run some Hollywood mufflers on his 57 Merc convertible . He wrecked the car a few years after buying it when he fell asleep at the wheel. What do you guys know about these?

I think Walker made high-quality glasspacks. Seems like they were bought out by Mitchell, who continued the line for several years. Hmmm, pretty sure the 30" Mitchell blanks are still on my truck!

Hush Thrush,Smitty's and Cherry Bombs are the ones I remember.I think you can still get all three.
Some people heated them up then ran the garden hose up the exhaust to help burn out the packing in them.

Seeing the pic of the old round thrush mufflers sure brought back memories. Not to stray from the topic but I also used to buy parts from a manufactuer called Rocket or Rocket engineering. I haven't seen anything from them in years. Mickey Thompson parts were big in the seventies too. I think Summit Racing is selling Smithy's. I would have to double check but I recall seeing them in their catalog. Seems like the retro rat rod is becoming the latest fad.

come to thank of it one of my earliest memories is sitting in the back seat of my dad's GTO with the thrush woodpecker sticker on the window.

Were the glasspack thrush the ones people used or the turbo muffuler type one made by thrush.

Smitty's were the ONLY muffler to have in the 50's and early 60's--NOTHING sounded better! I was there! Still run them on my '52 coupe and will on my '68 shortstep when I get to that point.

Dinnut,
In texas the exhaust basicly must exit beyond the pass compartment( cab) (includes trunk for the car folks) and contain a muffler, oh and cat if it was equiped from the factory, except I think trucks registered as farm truck can remove the cat legaly,,,,,fire hazard in the field (we pulled em off for that reason legal or not)

And the glasspack is legal, he!! I got a buddy running a 454/4speed with 3" pipe and 36" echo chambers......damn is it loud.....absolutely no muffler

Hell, both of my Dodge daily drivers are straight piped all the way out. One is a year old and the other is 5 months old.

It's the norm where I live.

Here in California there we used Thrush and cherry bomb, but also just a plain old "Truck Muffler". It was pretty much like the Thrush muffler in the pic but it was a lot cheaper and if it was too quiet we would take a 1" piece of pipe and knock out the inside of the muffler. Gave it a Sweet sound!
