I'm wondering if I adjust my timing if that'll help with it running rich. Once in a blue moon I'll hear a backfire in the carb which I know for a fact ain't good.

That's my thoughts!
You might need more initial timing.
Try 14 initial.
That extra timing will speed up your rpm.
Motor is more efficient with more timing so idles higher.
Then you need to reduce your idle to 700 rpm.
As it sits now you're likely idling on the power circuit. That's why it's rich.
Might be some timing tweaks will cure it with no carb rebuilding required.

Can you take a little time and burn us off some pics of your motor.
