The thing about dogs from that place, it's not all that easy to tell if the thing is spoiled, or not.

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

You might as well left some mayo out in the sun for a day and then spread it on a ham sandwich. Spoiled dairy products (cheese) can make you very ill. The hot dog you could leave it for some time with all the stuff they add.

I read somewhere that hot dogs and Twinkies can last for years in the ground at the dump. Don't know how true that is. I also read at a science site about the relative effects of different foods, and hot dogs were alleged to take 35 or so minutes off of your life, per each dog. Kale was supposed to extend your life, so I guess a "Kale-Dog" is in my future...not!

That's interesting and disconcerting news about actually figuring that a specific food could kill you sooner. I wish I knew where I was in that longevity picture and then I would just eat enough hot dogs to make it so I got through the previous day.

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

35 minutes? Not 33 or 34? Sounds like too much figurin' going on to me. Hot dog is a very general term. Not all are created equally and at what point do they become bratwurst or other sausage?

All I know is I'm funny about food left in the fridge too long, let alone out on the counter. anything that gets left out gets tossed. But I will admit I have snuck a bite of something left out more than once because it was so good. One of those shows like the Today Show said for Thanksgiving three hours is the limit for leaving the turkey out, and I use that to judge. starts getting around 6 hours and I dunno....

Remember when Kale was a decoration in the meat counter at the butcher shop?

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

I'm guessing that the 36 minutes is some kind of average. I know it sounds crazy. Here's a link for anyone interested.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/08/27/healt...scn/index.html

And I don't eat kale...

You can use ziploc bags for keeping leftovers in the fridge. If it puffs up and turns into a pillow, it's time to let it go, haha.

As far as I know we don't have Checkers out here. That sounds like a good thing now.

That reminds me of two things that are really good fresh and totally disgusting reheated.

#1 McDonalds french fries. How can something so good go so bad?

#2 In N Out Burgers. Arguably one of the best burgers out there but don't try to reheat one. You will be sorely disappointed.

Eating leftovers is always a crap shoot. In more ways than one.

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

I've never seen any issue with spoiled dairy products here. Our milk and yogurt is all directly from the farm bulk tank. No pasteurization, nothing. The cheese I eat is all purchased in five-pound blocks. Mozzarella, Cheddar, and Farmer's Cheese are my favorites. If it molds, I cut off the molded area, and eat the rest. If milk sits around too long, it sours, and is not as appealing anymore. But that's mostly because I don't like sour milk.

Further, I've been playing around with different methods of raising calves. If I let the milk bottles develop a layer of white yogurt inside, I can forego any cleaning of the bottles without negative health effects on the calves. It seems like the naturally-occurring yogurt cultures keep the bad bacteria away altogether.

A lot of the danger of spoiled dairy products appears to be an issue only with pasteurized stuff. The unpasteurized milk products sour in a relatively harmless manner. I'm not convinced that pasteurization is as much of a public-health benefit as we've always been told.

If the milk sours make cookies out of it. They are really good.

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

I eat kale and don't eat hot dogs. I might once in a rare blue moon eat one, but probably because that's all I'm offered. Why eat hot dogs when you can eat a sausage? You can make kale delicious when done right. I grew up eating greens. My mom is a great cook. We'd put vinegar on the leafy greens. These days I prefer it slow cooked with spices. Kale probably is my least favorite greens though. Give me collard greens, spinach, beet tops...mmmm

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

I'm with you on the sausages. When one of my sons was at uni, he had a choice between a dog spinning on the rotisserie thing at 7-11 for hours or a street vendor who made his own sausage and charged less money. Didn't need a college degree to figure that one out! I think that they had to walk to the end of the block, though. Probably 100 yards.

I think I might take your word for it. It doesn't sound like a good idea and I doubt my wife would go for it. That's not the secret ingredient on your coke cake is it?

It sounds good to me. But then again I eat rotten hot dogs.

Seriously. The sour may balance out the sweet of the sugar and I'm guessing that baking them would kill any bacteria.

A lot of odd ingredients actually work very well. I put anchovies and grape jelly in my BBQ sauce and you would never guess that they were in there.

Are you sure about baking them killing the bacteria? Lol there was your hot dog
Experiment

Edit: anchovies and grape jelly in bbq sauce? That sounds like a possible gut bomb in its self

Nope, no sour milk in my Chocolate cake....

I don't have access to real sour milk any more. (don't use the pasturized stuff) so I use Buttermilk. It tastes just as good and I can get it at the grocery store. If you can't find Buttermilk you can use whole milk and vinegar mixed..... I made some cookies yesterday afternoon.... YUMMM!

Re: Bad decisions or twisted logic?

I wish I lived next to you Leon. Maybe I could put on some weight. I could use a few pounds.

My father used to drink Buttermilk (Yuck) It's great for cooking. But drinking it straight is gross. My dad would eat anything. That's why he was fat. I keep losing weight and I'm not even trying to. My metabolism just burns it off. I'm getting close to being 30 pounds underweight. And that's not good.

I'm turning into walking beef jerky.
