Re: Gas Prices?

Just came back from town and ours has jumped another 10 cents since yesterday. That's 32 cents in 5 days. That's 3 increases in less than a week.
I'm starting to think one of those diesel VWs that gets 40 mpg is a good idea about now.

Could be, IF you can find one that the EPA hasn't tampered with, er, I mean, "fixed".

Re: Gas Prices?

It has jumped here again too. The $2.99 that most of the stations were charging, is now $3.15

Same here. I was reading about the $.20 jumps here and felt good yesterday when I saw ours only jumped a dime. Then today it's up another dime. Almost back up to where it was a couple weeks ago! Jeezy peezy, that didn't last long. It's a racket I tell ya

One quarter of my recent garbage collection bill was a fuel surcharge.

That sounds like some government BS way to get more money, when they are not "allowed" to raise the actual price.

Sounds like a private garbage company . The local gravel yard was supercharging any load under 20 tons . I just ordered 20 ton of #2 and 20 ton of #7

Re: Gas Prices?

I can see that as a possibility, but proves it? Why did it go back up for just a few days and why is it going down now?

An added fuel surcharge is exactly like what the gov't does. Rather than raise taxes they invent or increase existing "fees". Some private businesses follow suit, so also sounds like them, the ones who don't absorb costs to keep prices fair.

The last time fuel shot up so high I had a supplier decide to add $50 delivery charge after decades of free delivery. Delivering materials is how they make their money. My orders were for seamless gutter run off on site. They have trucks set up and employees trained to do just that. I would pick up shorter lengths for a quick small job, but full house orders with longer lengths I'd have run off on site. Not a big deal adding $50 to the price, once you know about it.

I found out about the $50 charge when I went in to order a delivery of an 80' piece of gutter for a job. I also needed a 20' piece at my house. I could have easily hauled that one with me, but I didn't want to wait and I didn't want to haul it around all day. So on one visit I placed two orders. When the bill came it seemed about $100 high. That's when I learned I paid for two $50 deliveries. That shorter piece could have been delivered to the other job had I known. When I complained the comment was, "We find contractors who factor in the added cost of fuel are meeting with the greatest success". Pretty snide remark and I almost severed ties right there. Small contractors were just getting by back then and we were sucking up the added cost to get the work. Fuel price went down, delivery charge remained... material costs continued to increase.

yup
as 90% of the materials we use are petro based, we're getting new cost sheets every couple weeks.
our suppliers are telling us not to put any estimates out for more than 30 days cause they don't know if they can honor prices for more than 4-5 weeks...
and were back at $6 even for a gal today...

On a related tangent, I just read about the pre-2010 big-rig diesel engine ban that just went into effect in CA: https://www.motorbiscuit.com/2010-ol...ia-now-banned/

"These compliance units will be tasked with auditing fleets and conducting random inspections. Those found not to be in compliance will be fined. And it has teamed up with the Environmental Protection Agency to handle trucks entering California from neighboring states. So enforcement is being stepped up and multi-pronged."

Re: Gas Prices?

$3.35 last night in town. Not the cheapest place but I was on a different route. I think I enjoyed two tanks when it was below $3.35, as low as $2.89. Where are we going now?

What if trucks decided not to enter CA? There's an option. Is there also a law to force a company to service the state?

Market is too big to ignore but certainly there are smaller outfits like car haulers who won’t be servicing CA.

Yeah, just a "what if", but I'm sure you are right drawing a line for some. There is always that not worth it line, or grey area, that's not the same for all. Usually the small guys first.
