1964 Turn Signal Switch - Thoughts Appreciated

My turn signal switch may need replacing, but I first wanted to see if anyone can tell me if anything is missing from it (springs?) - see pics below (apologies if they look huge!).

The switch turns both signals on as it should, but the arm wont stay up for the right hand turn, and sometimes the left turn goes on when it shouldn't - so basically the weight of the arm is working against it.

I've tightened the brass looking screw at the rear of the switch which seems to have helped, but is it broken/missing anything??

If those are breaks in the 2 areas that are circled, that's most likely the problem. Memory serves right, they have to do with the signal return. If you end up replacing the unit, purchase a good replacement so you don't have to do this twice. Chinese piece of chunk lasted 2 months, the Wells has given me no problems for over 8 years.

A keen eye - thanks ACK. Not sure if they are breaks, but will pull it apart again and check - the plastic is pretty brittle, so it could well be the source of the issue. I had seen previous threads saying there's a lot of poor quality switches out there, so if I need to replace, I'll be sourcing a Wells (P/N: SW3027) or AC Delco version (P/N: D6202)...if I can find one: they seem pretty scarce.

I recently installed the "better" switch from Classic Truck parts. They list "repro" and "OE quality" switches. I'm not sure if it is truly "OE quality", but it does seem like a pretty decent part.

I recommend replacing the cancelling cam that screws on to the back of the steering wheel at the same time. What might look like slight wear can cause lots of problems in switch feel and function.

The switch I linked above came with a new cam already in place.

Oops! No, that part (I've seen it called the "canceller") in my truck was OK. I was referring to the "cam" that attaches to the switch. My new switch came with this one.

Thanks Arne and Casey - unfortunately American Classic Truck Parts won't ship to my location (Australia), so I'll have to try my luck elsewhere. A shame because I need a single hubcap too (new or otherwise) and no one else seems to supply singles (that will ship to Australia).

Circling back on this to close it out, I ended up ordering the switch from Classic Parts and it is working well (invoice says “Chevy OE quality’ and it was $64.95), so that’s a win as far as I’m concerned. Amazing how the small things make such a difference to the driving experience!
