Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

Not as bad as you think. haha On the way back from the car show the engine lost power pulling a grade. My initial thought was ignition or fuel pump going out. Limped to the top and pulled over...sure enough it was vapor lock. The metal filter had fallen close to the exhaust manifold and was really hot. So I moved it away from the manifold and put a cold wet rag around it. Lucky I was half way home so she drove the rest of the way ok. It was over 100 degrees outside and she was running a tad bit hotter as it was her 1st long journey....but she never got past 190-200 the entire time. And while driving the engine was lower than 180. After I got home a freeze plug blew at the back head and drained most of the coolant on the ground. SO, since I needed to fix the plug which required the head to be removed I figured...Hell, Why not! Let's pull the darn motor and install new gaskets and reseal it. Boy was that a mistake...biggest pain in the butt I have had yet. I'm a find that engineer and kick him good. Anyhow, here are the pictures. The 305 will be resealed and painted either caddy red or detroit diesel green.

Gotta love idiot previous owners who can't drive a stick shift for their life. lol New clutch, pressure plate and hopefully a flywheel will be on their way as well. Notice the chunk of clutch missing...

Hmmmmm....I have seen clutches do that with multiple hard lanuches off the line.

Sorry to see the mess, but least now you'll have the heart of Crustine back to gold.

From Car show to pulling engine, wow is appropriate!!! Will post update later today... Glad the V6 is getting a freshening up... ...and that clutch needed some attention, good timing on the issues... Nevertheless, hope the show was enjoyable even in the heat...

Thanks man. Yeah, anything can happen with these old things! The engine could use a light rebuild, but it runs and runs well so I am stopping at a reseal.

lol. Thought ya might get a jaw drop out of it. But it should be worth it in the long run as it won't be slinging oil out the rear main and all over the place. Plus for the next car show I can saw I Did something! haha! Pictures of the show will be uploaded onto another thread soon man.

Smart decision of stopping at a reseal, you know how these projects work, "while I'm doing that I might as well do this" and it turns into a full restoration

Re: 1964 GMC 1500 "crustine" semi- build.

So I've got some updates on things. To replace the rear main ended up requiring me to pull the crank which revealed the main and rod bearings. The mains look great but most of the rod bearings are worn to the brass. SO, new rod and main bearings are on their way. Thanks to all the people for scrapping these good motors I am having one hell of a time finding parts. The rod bearings are available, but the mains I could only get a set from ebay made by TWR some time ago. I also have a new oil pump and timing chain on the way. Debating on putting a new water pump in as well since I have it apart and that is more "cheap" insurance. As far as I have this motor torn down I almost bit the bullet and purchased a set of rings, mainly because I can see blow by on the bottoms of the walls. Nothing that a can of engine restore can't help with due to how good this engine runs. Anyhow, got the oil pain, valley pan, and motor mounts painted up. Looking perrty good thus far.

Goof Lord, look at that bore spacing!! The walls must be 2 inches thick. Makes you wonder how people can get 1,000 reliable HP out of today's thin walled LS motors. Have to love that old American strategy though. You want it strong? Then make it big!

haha! No kidding! Took a couple evenings to get that thing cleaned. That's actually not the whole water pump. It's the timing cover and water pump Housing all in one. The pump itself unbolts and comes right out like a regular pump would. Just looks bigger than it really is. Stinking spendy to!
