Im not a Big caller
And what if he says yes to $650? You still have no money to buy it or get it home. If he is an older guy, he may not respond to a text. I know i seldom do. (not that i am old)
My advice is figure out what you want to do, Save some money up to buy what you want assuming you won't get your grandpas truck back. When you are ready to pull the trigger, don't jump on the first truck you find and be prepared to negotiate on the phone or in person. I hope you find a job and a truck.
For now, just soak up all the knowledge from this board you can...

Re: Looking for my Grandfathers 1971 GMC SIERRA

You will miss out on a lot of good advice and also deals in this hobby if you stick to texting only. One-on-one communication is a dying art. Hang out with some old folks and watch how they talk to each other. You have to be able to convey respect, humor, empathy and understand it as well. Do that and you will open doors...trust me!

I always call first on parts and trucks unless is says text only. When somebody texts me about an entire truck I'm selling I know they're not serious. When they text me an offer I always say "come and see it first". 99.9% of the time you never hear from them again.

-Get a towing company to meet you there and haul it home for you. It'll probably be under $75. Call around to different companies, you will often see a WIDE variation in tow companies prices. And you can often tell them. I need to get it done for $50.00 and one may agree to do it.
-Ask the owner if he'll deliver it. It appears that he has several projects in the background. I'd bet he even has a trailer. Just make sure you look at it and make him an offer before you ask him to haul it for you. Because sometimes this can hurt your ability to bargain on the price since he is doing a favor for you.

No a/c... no problem. Drive it with the windows down until you can afford to put a Vintage Air kit in it
. Easy fix. I ran my Burb for a whole NC summer without A/C. Now it's NICE and cool.

Never put an engine in? ... no problem. One of your friends or relatives has. It'll be a good learning experience. And even if you had to buy a different engine down the road, SBC's (small block chevy's) are cheap.
Forum user Beetle just bought a running 305 sbc off of Bhelton in Hickory for $100 yesterday. While it feels like you have to spend a lot of money to get your truck running, it can be the cheapest vehicle you ever own. (in the long run)
Parts are everywhere and CHEAP.

That's was what I meant yesterday... you gotta make the decision that you are getting it no matter what. Dont let the little obstacles slow down your desire to have a cool truck.

Either way, you better call about it quick. Because it is a SWB, so for that kind of money, it wont be there long.
LOL, the A/C part cracked me up LOL

but I agree with all of it.

There are several companies with kits for these trucks with or without original air which would probably be a better option the factory air.
Vintage Air & Old Air are two you could start to look at.

You could put in the factory air but its just a lot easier and usually cheaper to go with the aftermarkets.

You will just have to come up with as much as you can, go look at it and make an offer in person, i personally hate when people try to offer me less than im asking before they even see ot, go to hom cash in hand, cash talks alot louder on person

Thats what i said but ive junked at least two swb trucks and countless longbeds, times get tough you dont have a place to put em it sucks i lost my dads 85 silverado swb that way it had caught on fire and i pulled the cab and front clip, had the motor and trans ready to come out, it was basically a chassis and rust free bed new exhaust new aluminum driceshaft, makes me sick but i had nowhere to park it

Re: Looking for my Grandfathers 1971 GMC SIERRA

My $.02...

Don't buy a truck; not yet anyway. All to many times I have seen people buy a truck with the intentions of fixing it up. Once they get it home they decide to blow the truck apart and start fixing it from the ground up. Then.... life happens. The washer goes out, you need to remodel a bathroom, you get married, kids, etc. Once life shows up at your front door, the project gets shifted to the side and it begins to sit. Go to craigslist and you will see what I'm talking about. Half finished projects, hacked up messes with custom (unfinished) upgrades, and the list goes on.

For instance, the black SWB posted above for $850. Within the add it says the PO (previous owner) installed bucket seats that the seller doesn't care for. I have to ask myself..... so why are they still in the truck? If it was my truck and I didn't like them, it would have been the first thing to go. Also, not saying the body isn't in bad shape, but I could almost lay money on it that the truck is not rust free. These trucks are notorius for rust in the bed, wheel wells, cab corners, rockers, above the windshield, front fender cups, radiator support, kick panels, firewall, etc. Just with the items I mentioned you could anticipate spending $2-6K just for replacement sheetmetal and you're still not driving down the road.

Now, I'm not trying to discourage you from buying a project. I'm just telling you to cover your necessities before you start sinking thousands into a truck that might not be finished and end up on craigslist at a fraction of what you've put into it.

If you have you backing for the rest of life (i.e., money for insurance, housing, food, transportation, savings, etc.) then I would consider this. If not, learn from the information on the board. Learn things like... rust free items are worth the extra cost, etc.

Re: Looking for my Grandfathers 1971 GMC SIERRA

I wish you luck in your search for your grandad's truck but there will come a time that you might have to consider accepting that the truck is long gone. The good thing about these trucks is that you can build them anyway you like and recreate the truck that he once owned as a tribute.

Besides... you might eventually find it but the seller wants $15-20K for it. It could be rusted out beyond repair, then what? I also have a lot of sentiment for keeping items that were owned by family so don't take it that I'm trying to discourage you from finding the truck.

Keep the faith of finding it just don't overlook the idea of rebuilding another truck.

Re: Looking for my Grandfathers 1971 GMC SIERRA

Yeah Nate I understand, but the rust was not bad at all.The Fresh paint was in the bed sides..and even the New stick inside the bed saying where it was bought was still there...I will never give up trying to find it...I may put it far down on the List but I will focus on more important things such as College and a Job...As it is my Dream to get one of these trucks,a 1974 Bug and that 1959 GMC TRUCK..That was ours...I may get the 59 more then this truck, but if I do get thr 59 and find this one, and the guy wants to sell it to me cheap then ill buy it..but until then I will focus on far more important things

I am looking for places that are hiring as of now to be able to get my own truck

I am a college student and I have had my truck for the past 8 years. College is a great thing but it's very demanding. It IS possible to work on a truck while putting yourself through school but it's not easy. I am nearing completion on a frame off restoration on my truck and I have paid for every nut and bolt that are on it. My point is if you set a goal for yourself and you don't let anything get in the way, anything is possible. If you would've asked me five years ago where I'd be now I would have said working somewhere making minimum wage and driving around a POS car but instead I applied myself and now I almost have a degree in Architecture and will soon be driving a bad a$$ 72 c10. I'm only 19 man, age is just a number

I did too, it sounds silly but i wanted to follow in my dads footsteps and open a junkyard, but with zoning laws and the big chain junkyards the little guys have no chance, as of right now im hoping to go to truck school and drive a truck for a living
