Re: There are still some good customer service companies

Over the years I've had some great customer service and poor. I purchased a Gerber pocket knife when I was about 12 or 13 and at some point something broke and the lock wouldn't work any more. Being a pack rat I threw it in a box and ran across is sometime after I got married so I had to be over 24 at the time. Sent it to Gerber and they sent me a new knife. Did the same thing with a cheaper Bushnell scope a number of years ago as well.

The company I work for has good customer service because I provide it! I spent Wednesday working on a radar level instrument on a condensate tank for a customer and yesterday checking out valves and flow meters for a customer before they start back up after an outage. I don't charge for those services, they buy their equipment from me and if they need a hand I show up and do it. A few months ago I gave a customer a $24,000 valve actuator because there had been big issues going on and I wasn't about to upset them over it. Too good a customer and sometimes you just gotta make a problem go away as fast as possible.

I wish that you worked for General Motors.

I think many (me included) wish General Motors had the attitude of customer service like they should. I am an engineer by degree but my "title" in my company is account manager. Basically, in my territory I run the business. If you spend $300K or more a year with me there isn't any way I am letting something make you think you should do business elsewhere. I deal with food, power, pulp and paper, chemical, you name it. I spent 20 years doing process/project engineering so I know who I like to do business with and try to be that person.

I know that I mentioned GM earlier. But I think the problem runs much deeper. I think that a lot of large corporations get a little too big for their britches. They feel that they are "Too big to fail". Amazon used to have great customer service and I've noticed that it's not so hot anymore. If you had a problem with your order before they'd take it back, no questions asked. That's not the case anymore. Now it's a hassle.

The banks are terrible. They say how important your call is while they put you on hold for 20+ minutes.

And forget the DMV or the IRS. If you call them, you had better have a lot of time on your hands to listen to that horrible music that they play when you're on hold for 2 hours. I swear that they play that music to try to get you to hang up.

When I deal with a company that really gets it right. (Like Weber) I wonder why the others can't.
