Thanks! I have connections with an auto distmantler. I checked through their entire stock of drivelines until I found the exact one I needed. I just had to change slip yokes & buy some combo ujoints. It amounted to about 60 bucks.

I took my truck for a short drive on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. She was running great until it stalled like it was out of gas. I put some gas in it but it ran like it had a clogged fuel filter. Sure enough, when I pulled out the filter it was completely clogged with what looked like pancake mix.

A suggestion for you... you need to weld some support plates where you cut and welded the frame together... with the way it is cut that is a MAJOR weak point and a few good bumps can/will cause that part of the frame to fail... just weld a 4"x12" 1/4" thick steel plate to the inside of the frame rail with 6" each side of the splice... Just a voice of experience... Dan

I personally have not... I know of 2 that have partially failed and we're caught prior to complete... I just want to help a forum member not to have anything happen that may cause severe problems by taking A few minutes and a few materials to protect themselves.. that's all...

Re: My new mistress! 68 GMC longbed

If I do put doubler plates on it would be on the flanges not the web. The flanges carry all the tension and compression load.

Well while that sound right in therory. The vertical stress is the issue... It is your truck, do what you want or don't do anything... It is always your truck and your choice... truck looks really kewl though..

Re: My new mistress! 68 GMC longbed

I have seen a number of shortened trucks where the builder welded in a diamond plate like Elliot949 has mentioned, it seems to be the most widely accepted method of reinforcing the frame. if you did a search on key words like LWB to SWB or frame shortening you will probably find a number of threads where people have done this, also fyi there is a thread posted in the faq's section showing how this mod is done as well.

EDIT, i have seen one other method where one of the parts vendors makes a chanel that slips inside the frame rail too.

I have the same plan in mind for my 67 when i get started on it, including the stepside bed. I think your truck is looking great!

Re: My new mistress! 68 GMC longbed

Registered my truck last Friday. It was on a non operation so there were no issues & took about 10 minutes at AAA. I still have lots to do before I start driving it around regularly though. But at least now I can show it to the guys at the parts store down the street.

Re: My new mistress! 68 GMC longbed

My replacement intermediate parking brake cable came in today so I hooked it up. It was pretty simple so now I don't have to carry around a 4x4 anymore.

i'm a civil engineer, and strengthening the web never made sense to me. as argonaut said the flanges take all the tension (primarily the bottom in this case). but i don't pretend to know everything, there's probably a reason why everyone goes for the web (hopefully not just to hide the conversion ).

in any case, truck is looking good!
