Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

Not a problem!
We’re hoping you don’t have a bunch of mismatched parts.
That’s the reason for the pics.

Looks like this is the bigger hump in the middle and is removable. And here are both sides of the current crossmember.

The two bottom pics are behind the crossmember in the truck. Not sure what the bracket is.

I’m guessing this is not the original because it’s bolted in and too far back

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

These are my Bellhousing up on this transmision. Snug fit in the middle but the only holes that come close to lining up are the top two.Name: A08CFD28-E98D-4518-AD20-41063182E4B0.jpg

You can see that when one of the top holes are lined up the other side doesn’t quite looked lined up as the top pic shows. The bottom pic is of the bottom two holes that can’t mount to anything.

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

Good pics!
It’s a high hump for sure.
The crossmember you need has been removed.
Looks like the tranny likely is one he had kicking around. Or the bell housing is.
You can find a crossmember, a bell that fits, and a tranny too.
Might find someone who wants to swap for your automatic.
Or use your bell with a better tranny like a Muncie, Saginaw or t10.
Any of those will have a mount on the tail shaft that would let you use the crossmember the automatic is bolted too.
You’d need a different hole in the hump for the shifter.
Decisions! Decisions!
You’ll need to figure out how badly you want a manual tranny.

Let us know your thoughts.

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

Chevy bell housing, dodge trans. I wonder why it all won't bolt up? Stop beating a dead horse, you've got the wrong transmission. If you want a manual trans, start looking for a later model unit that takes a rear x-member under the unit ...........some thing out of a 73+ or maybe look into an NV 4500, the 5th gear overdrive is always nice.

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

Ok well I knew something probably wasn’t right. Ya Bellhousing matches the truck according to the numbers. The Previous owner runs a mechanic shop so I think he’s given me the wrong trans. There were a few more sitting there so I’m going to check with him Monday on maybe giving me the right one. I’m pretty dead set on getting her back to a manual trans truck. If I can get the original tranny, how will I know what to look for as far as the crossmember? I’m assuming I can just bolt it in since the original was riveted on and someone had to grind or take the rivets out. Appreciate the help fellas!!

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

And if I can’t get a hold of my original transmision, would a Muncie SM465 or SM420 bolt up to where I can use the factory shifter hole? And of course I’ll still have to use the original crossmember.

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

I can’t help with what original crossmember to get but like kw mentioned, find a tranny with a rear mount and bolt it in to your existing crossmember.
Maybe the mechanic will have one.

Re: 1970 C20 Manual Transmision Identification Help.

Well thanks fellas! I’m going to get a hold of him this week and see if I can locate the original transmision. If not I may go that route and see if I can find one that will mount on the tail shaft and keep this crossmember in the truck. I will definitely post again when I find out what he’s got. Until then thanks for all yalls help!!
