Interesting, I didn't know they reproduced that part, if that itty bitty photo is what I think it is.

So, is transmission placement the only reason for the 66+ parking brake cable routing?

Re: 1966 and later park brake system - layout with photos - no cross member

I believe so.

A manual is just hung from the the front (or rear 'engine' crossmember).

Great write BTW Woog !!!

I believe someone sells an e-brake kit for the 65 and older guys who want to run an auto tranny.

However, running a '66 and later system is much simpler and neater.

One thing I did on my old truck, is retain my old e-brake crossmember, and fabricate and add a tranny mount to it.

LostMy65,

pretty much... or if you significantly lower the truck, but still want the park brake.

A lot of folks will use a different locking mechanism inside the truck tho'.

Also, if the system is missing from the truck, it's a little easier to find the stuff for the '66-'72 style.

Nothing wrong with the original style. You can just drop it down lower under the newer transmission and keep using it. It's all about what you have when you get started.

There is no reason I'm aware of to remove it if you have the original style if you are running it at a stock ride height or... not z frame/c notch low.

Woogeroo, Thanks for the great write up! I plan on installing a Cadillac foot operated E Brake unit in my truck and this will help out immensely!

Thanks for the replies, guys.
I do plan on switching to Auto on my 65, but I don't plan on going any lower than it is now.

The photo and caption in post #5 shows the original brake mechanism, lowered under a later style transmission. People have done it different ways.

Post # 1, has a link showing how Jim Z modded the location of his original 1960-1965 style brake mechanism.

If you're using a stock e-brake handle, has anyone found a tricky little switch that an idiot lite could be wired to that says, "Hey stupid, your emergency brake is on"?

That is handy modification there... but if yer park brake is properly adjusted and holding the vehicle, you will figure it out quick enough when you can't go!!

Those of you with 1966 model trucks... or those that have done the swap... feel free to post your photos of your bits and pieces of your layout.

I know several people have asked about the park brake handle to cable area in the cab.

Just add them in here so they stay together.

I would like the 66 park brake cable set up but leave my 64 pull handle. Is this possible? has anyone done it? I can't give up my 64 handle as it is a very cool piece of the interior.

Thank you in advance,
Tom

This photo the cable going through the floor of the cab, underneath the steering column.

The bottom two photos shows the cable where it attaches to the brake handle lock mechanism under the dash/steering column.

I hope this helps.

If any of you other folks have photos of your 1966-1972 style park brake systems, feel free to add them in here. That way the folks who are pondering doing this swap will have a better idea of what parts they need and how it all goes together.

FYI: this isn't a plug for their parts, but the LMC Truck 60-66 catalog has a pretty good list/exploded view of the parts for this brake system in their catalog. You can check it out on their website.

Many other vendors sell some of the bits and pieces, so check around and do some research.

As always, check the Review Board here on the forum before buying any parts from anywhere.

-W

p.s. some of you may notice the bolt with the nut sitting by the cable. I think the bracket was an aftermarket part. I do not recall if the bracket was for the '65 c10 or the later truck... however, when I got it all set up, the cable sheathing itself would not stay secure in place, therefore nothing worked. You can see where the coating is torn from this movement.

This was my good ol' boy solution. I used a bolt as a spacer to snug things up.

a fellow old truck pal(64fleetside on the stovebolt page) had this to share : I've had a couple slip too, woog-I've usually removed the clamp and smacked it w/a hammer, then it fit tighter.

p.s. update/edit 01/03/2013 - a link to a thread here on the forum with up close shot of the original park brake mechanism for 60-65

Re: 1966 and later park brake system - layout with photos - no cross member

I have read and reread this post several times and I'm still not sure if I'm grasping the concept in its entirety. Specifically, do all cables (front, inter and rear) have to be for a 1966? I know the inter cable has to be a 1966 and I know I have to replace the brackets that tie the inter and rear cables together. Its the front and rear ones that I'm not sure of and I have to replace the ones that I have now. I have a 62 SWB and the price difference is about $35 dollars between the 62 and 66 H/W. Also, LMC 67-72 catalog shows the Parking Brake Cable Guide Kit (34-3113) that has the fixed rod along with two hangers and two brackets and I was wondering if this would work in the 1966 setup? Thanks!

I was just looking into converting my '64 to the '66-up e-brake system. Like Trap62, I noticed LMC does indeed carry that cable guide (#34-3113). It seems they now sell everything you need to convert an older truck.

Anyone know what's up?

Howdy folks...

... so I was changing my oil yesterday afternoon and while I still had it up on the ramps and had some daylight left, I decided to take some more photos of the e brake system on my truck.

Maybe it will help some folks out sometime.

Some of the photos turned out pretty good, but some of them are kinda blurry... but I think you can get the gist of things anyway.

The threaded end is the last part of the cable, this is how it attaches to the 'intermediate cable' as the parts vendors call it. The 'intermediate cable' comes in two lengths, one for a short wheelbase, the other for a long wheelbase. This is the 'half moon' looking part I referred to earlier in this thread. The 'intermediate cable' goes into that part, then the threaded end of the cable goes in to keep it from coming out. When you pull the brake handle, it pulls the cable here, putting tension on the brake shoes in each rear drum.

*bad photo*

This is on the passenger side, this is the end of the 'guide rod', where the 'intermediate cable' feed through that 'half moon' shaped part. The guide rod feeds through a hole on the passenger side frame rail.

driver side, trailing arm. When I installed this system, I had to drill the holes here to locate that bracket. This bracket is where the 'intermediate cable' meets the cable that goes into the back of the brake drum and actually pulls on the parking lever. There is an existing hole farther down the arm, but it really bunched up the 67-72 style cable that I had coming out of the back of the brake drum.

another blurry shot... FYI : originally this bracket was held on by really big rivets, which you can buy and use if you have a blowtorch to heat 'em up with... then you bang on 'em with a hammer to flatten out the ends... or 'peen' it over as the saying goes. I didn't have a torch and wasn't thrilled about heating them up another way and having to handle them, so I just used grade 8 bolts, hardware and lock washers.
