Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod

Did I spy? Did you have to shorten that front support on the hinges? Did that change the angle the hood is at when you close it? Sorry for doubting but I'm from Missouri. Can you show me? I'm sure you already thought of this. (you've thought of everything else on this thread.) I sure enjoy following your threads!!! Keep up the good work!

Yes I shortened one of the links as shown in the pics but I drilled the new hole at the same spacing as the original; no change in geometry

Great work, I wish I had room under my hood for some of these mods. I may have to make my hood tilt foward like a Corvette.

Well, I have the 61 back but... now I have no room in the garage... I mean NO room to do anything. So I'm buying a house with a shop After I get moved in I'll get started on these again.

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod

Can't wait to put these on! Maybe next weekend.

The welder has been great except for one wire jam which was my fault. I got a replacement wire guide and was back in business. I know craftsman is not a name you usually think of for welders but it performs well.

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod

Well, it took a while to get to a point where I could put these on. But they are on for a test fit. Post 757 here.

The plan is to buy another set of inners to combine with mine for the extension.

This will be the interesting part. IMO, it will take some effort making the cuts/spices in the correct locations to keep things 'looking' proportional & thus unmolested.

I know you'll make it look easy.... it's the rest of us I'm worried about .

Re: Frizzle's Inner Fender Mod

First of all, that is some very nice work.

I did a very similar mod to my truck a few years ago. I basically sectioned out a 1" strip from the hinge mounting area to the point where the core support brace bolts to the fender. That was the last thing I did to the truck before I stopped working on it (got married, home improvements, etc.). Over the past few days I have gotten the truck out of hibernation and was looking at the hood hinges with respect to the raised inner fenders after looking at this thread. My question is, do the hood hinges collapse to their full extent of travel when the hood is closed? I'm wondering if the hinges even need to be modified. I removed the spring from the hinge and bolted it to the fender. When it is collapsed all the way, the hinge does hit the inner fender, as apparent in your picture. However, the back of the hinge flange (where it bolts to the hood) comes very, very close to hitting the firewall. That made me wonder if maybe the hood closes before the hinge itself bottoms out. I guess I'll have to bolt the hood back on and see what happens. Did you try bolting the hood on before modifying the hinges?

I'll try to post some pics of mine in the near future.

You're absolutely correct that they do not fully collapse when the hood is closed. The mods I made in these pictures (clearanced arm and shortened link) are shown with the hinge roughly in the position it will go to with the hood closed:

With the curvature of the inner fenders they might not touch unmodded, but I wanted to give my nicely painted inner fenders (someday) a chance to stay that way. Cheap insurance.
