Great project! Why use a Dana 70? A 14BFF would work a lot better and be stronger and have more gear options.

Is it all the photos or just the last set of photos? The last set were not down sized before I uploaded them. My computer shows them all fine, but I would like to correct the issue. It's the image size that is causing the problem right?

1954 Monster 4X4 Shop Truck "Crash"
The town's in which we live...
I live in a small town, filled with people who thrive on other people's business. A woman, AKA "PIT" (For a better choice in words). The kind of "Pit" you find in a porta potty after a town fair. "Pit" would walk up and down my street, every day, trudging along behind her two grandchildren. Now, don't take this the wrong way, because being a father myself, I love kids. Well, actually I love my son, and I can't stand anyone else kid's (For the most part). Pit's two grandchildren remind me of miniature cage fighters. Blue eyed, blonde hair, mohawks, and a camo clothing (A pure blood). You might find one of these two boys pulling a cat behind them by the tail, and in the other hand holding a firecracker or slingshot. Now, it isn't their fault... "Pit" is a caring woman...  Don't let her face foul you. Even thought it looks as if her tongue has died, spent years decaying in her mouth, and rather than cutting it out, she rather just squinch, similar to tensing very single muscle in your face simultaneously."Pit" is the neighbor hood watch "DOG", and until recently I discovered she is also a code Enforcer! GREAT! Prior to moving into my home, I took (8) loads of brush and garbage, packed in a 18 foot dump bed utility trailer, to the dump. I have one of the cleanest yards on my street.... Well, you all guessed it..."Pit" noticed that my project "Crash" was supported by four jack stands and not on wheels. This is a hazardous situation... The "Town" informed me that if a child were to find their way under my truck, and if the truck were to fall... You can figure out the rest... Just thinking out loud... If project "Crash" were to take out these two miniature cage fighters, would it be a loss, or ? Just kidding, I would never want anything bad to happen to a child (Seriously). "Pit" on the other hand? So, there you have it. Project "Crash" had to be on wheels or the fines were going to start flying!! I purchased a 1987 Chevy Blazer with 3/4 ton running gear, and a brand new 4" pro comp lift for $350.00. The gas tank fits perfectly between the frame rails of "Crash", and has a factory fuel tank skid plate. This running gear is actually going to be installed in my 1977 Toyota BJ40 Land Cruiser (Factory Diesel FJ40), but it will work for now, until I find the right donor truck. One thing is for certain...This truck is going to be big!  Remember that this is temporary...Shackles are not finished... Just needed to avoid fines...You'll see a much nicer final product when completed. |

I'm thinking Alcoa Super singles in the rear, and the regular dually style fronts. 38"-40" tall Tires...
My neighbor is a CHP officer, and he said I should be very close to the legal bumper height limit... I'll make up a few photo studio pics on what my thoughts are for this beast... Feel free to post your suggestions! Just remember, it's a work truck, so it has to have tires that get good mileage, and have a decent ride quality. Also, remember that I would like to make this thing with "Crash" the previous owner in mind. It's kind of a tribute to "Crash" and all the other past industrial laborers. Here's my thoughts... Drive train: Duramax Diesel with Allison Transmission Dana 60 Front axle Dana 70 or FF 14 bolt rear axle Body: Hydraulic Dump flat bed tool boxes under bed Line X sprayed inside fender wells, engine compartment, under cab, and interior floors Black or gun metal grey paint Interior: 100% original except for tilt steering, A/C, gauges... Other: Side Pipe exhaust (Exit just behind running boards) Drop down step, built from an original running board. Peter built horns (Chrome) mounted on front fenders or top of cab Old school Peter built cab lights Front and rear sway bars Air bags in the rear wench hidden behind front grill, and the guide rollers installed in bumper And the list will go on! |

Lookin' good... neighbors can be a real PITA!
As for suggestions- I would consider doing a Linex type liner on all of the frame, or something like POR-15. It looks like you already have something coating the frame though so you may already be headed that direction. You may also want to ditch the srung seats and go with an original style cover with modern foam bench and the original seat frames- Those old seats can get uncomfortable on a long ride. I like the idea of a BIG diesel weed burner exhuast! That thing is going to be KILLER CRASH!

A Dmax/Allison is very expensive and time/money consuming to swap in. A 1st gen 12 valve Cummins would be much cheaper and easier to put it, plus it can make more power for less $$ than the Dmax.

that's funny about the jackstands. i have had one of my trucks front end on stands for about the last 4 months while i fabricate a turbo system for it. no complaints from any neighbors. it does help that my garage is detached and all the way at the back of my lot though....

I agree with the previous post about using a cummins instead of the D-max. The cummins is alot easier of a swap anyday. It is mainly all the electronics required for the Duramax to run, unlike the Cummins and it is not a Chevy/Dodge thing...A cummins sitting in a Dodge was about the best thing that ever happened to the truck. I know a few Ford guys that have swapped their Power Stroke for a Cummins!
