One last thing. Is there a simple way to decode what gear this truck has in the rear end? I need to find out so I know what cam to put in the motor. I see numbers NF3896838 and THA WO96 2 Thanks

I think it might be a 3.08 from what I am reading. the center number on the gear is a 14 43 would this be right?

Correct, you divide the 43 by 14 and get 3.071428571428571 or 3.08

My shortbed came with a 3.071428571428571 rear,too. But,I'm changing to a shorter ratio

The cam I'm going to use they say a 3.50 gear with a 2200 stall would work best. My question is how that will work going down the road as far as mpg and performance. 3.50 vs 3.08 Has anybody done this?

This thread is evolving into another topic.Maybe,if no luck comes here,you should start a new thread with this specific topic. In the Engine & Drivetrain forum. I figure you could make up the difference in gearing with different stall speed. But,why this cam? Basically,you buy a cam to fit what you have or make what you have fit the cam. So,if you are stuck on this cam maybe you want to change gears? I'm changing my 3.08s to 3.42 because I'm going with a 4-on-the-floor and 3.08s will be doggy. I want to have decent hiway gears for now and hopefully add a Gear Vendors o/d. And 3.42s will work better with o/d.
