Well we started with the cab by serving any of the creatures left over from the move with an eviction notice. I emptied the old bad gas from the fuel tank. Is there anything else I should do to the tank before reinstalling it?

Clean wash rust preventative work maybe wax the area back there re install

if its a solid truck you might drill some holes back there somewhere (cab corner areas for water to drain?)

Okay where can I get one of these without paying $37? It along with the stud it self is missing. For that price I'll just build one.

Okay so I'm reading up on subframe swaps and column swaps. I would like to buy a complete truck or van I could pull the engine, trany, front suspension, power steering/brakes, and column from to swap into my truck.

From what I've read the 73-87 (88 and 89 burbs too) subframes are interchangable with slight modifications. This would get me front disc. Are the rear ends interchangable too? If I do the disc upgrade I'd have to change out the rear axle to make it a 5 lug.

As far as the steering column swap it sounds like up to 81 columns are the way to go. So here is my question......are the 73-81 van subframes interchangable? There is a running 77 van with an auto and V8 local for $600.

I don't have the budget right now to go crazy on the truck but I would like to get it safer to drive with power steering/brakes and an auto for the wife.

It runs but it will not take throttle. It will idle for no more than about 2 minutes before it just dies. If I add throttle slowly I can get the rpm’s up but then it will just quit. Sometime with a little backfire/popping through the carb. I can keep it running when it tries to die at idle by spraying carb cleaner so I’m pretty sure the carb is the issue and not my timing, compression, or spark. I’ve never worked on these 1bbl carbs and this kind of stuff isn’t my cup of tea. It only has one adjustment screw for idle. I’ve already rebuilt the carb which seemed to have gone fine. Any help please.

The seat is back in and the bed is stripped of the old rotted wood.

Sounds like either the accelerator pump or something to do with timing?

carb backfire leads me to believe timing as it'll idle...maybe it's off a tooth?

Well I guess I'm about out of options for trying to narrow it down without spending the bucks for a new carb. I replaced the fuel pump tonight and it does the same thing. So I've waisted about $100 now trying to get this thing running.

I really don't want to spend another $100 on a carb when I'm just going to pull it and throw in a 350. Problem is I really needed it running this week since the fam will be down another car as of Tuesday. SIGH

Did you check the timing, if its retarded it will run poorly. Not sure if you have one on there but look at the egr valve, see if its opening at idle or stuck open.

Yup, I checked the timing already. I'm pretty sure I don't have an EGF valve.

Well I just bought the subframe disc to disc, rearend, and rollers from this for my project.

84 Suburban with drop spindles.



I also picked up some seats from a 2004 Silverado.

Your accelerator pump is dried out. Backfires are usually from either lean conditions or serious timing issues. Chevy sixes have gears on the cam and crank instead of a chain. They can and do go bad, but the design makes it difficult for them to jump a tooth.

Rebuild kits are about 14 dollars. The average guy can do the job with a little patience. THey are simple carbs. Best of luck.

That's a great looking six! Please excuse my ignorance but where/what is an accelerator pump? If you are suggesting rebuilding the carb, its been done.

Accelerator pump is internal to the carb. It squirts gas into the venturi area when you mash on the gas. The extra gas is necessary as to give the fuel mixture enough fuel over air to keep the engine from stalling.

I know this is basic, but did you remove the brass inlet (place where you attach the fuel line?). This contains a filter, either stone or paper, that can be clogged.

The carb may not getting enough fuel to run other than on the idle circuit.

Got it, I looked up accelerator pump and saw the part. That was replaced when I did the carb rebuild (was included in the kit). I replaced the fuel filter inside of the carb also when I rebuilt it.

Anyone know if my 3 on the tree will bolt up to a 96 LT1? I've read it will mate with a SB 350. Thanks

Disregard the last post, on a side note there is a 96 LT1 in Sacramento, already set up for a stand alone application (dude has it in his 74 C10) for $800 complete with motor mounts headers new optispark, more.

What year 1bbl carbs will work on my 68 292? I've found more 75-79 carbs more then anything else.

Where is the best plae to get a 1.25" hub/rotor for the 73-87 spindles with a six lug patter? Is there a vehicle these came on or is this a specialty part? So far I've only been able to find them from vendors who sell disc upgrades. Thanks

Well I got another carb for my truck. I haven't had time yet to rebuild it but I installed it and it ran the same way. Same problem with not running past idle. Any suggestions? Thanks

accel pump is very easy to check. With the engine off, look down the throat/barrel of the carb and pull the throttle; if you can see a visible squirt of fuel, you're good. If not, your pump is bad or the orifices are covered/plugged.


When you start the engine... do you have to pump the gas? Does it start easier if you pump the gas once or twice? Or more?... that's also your accel pump at work.
