Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Well, compared to a lot of you I did not do much today but I am happy I got something done.

It was not as blazing hot today as it has been and I decided not to work on the room I am building for my wife, she is at work, lol!

I had not started the '71 with the 454 lately so I decided to start it and take it for a short drive, wouldn't you know it the battery was too low to start it. I charged the battery, sprayed some starting fluid in the carb and it started right up. I took it for a short drive to give it a little exercise.

When I got back from the drive I put the battery charger back on it. I got the heat shield tubing out I had bought, heck, six months ago and put it on the spark plug boots. Now I am not so worried the spark plug boots will be damaged.

Nothing this weekend. Had to work. Although I walked out to the shop a lot for other things, but I was sure hoping to see if the "Sanding Fairies" had visitied and did their job.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I did some work in the shop a little earlier, after I did a little work on the '71. I replaced both battery cables on the '86 4Runner, it sure turns over a lot better with the new heavier duty cables.

Now I can get one of my trucks back in the shop.

I drove the '71 up to my son's house and we sat for a few hours talking about general stuff, but mostly old trucks. The truck ran great even though it had been quite a while since I have driven it. Boy!!!!!!!!!!! That 454 sure loves gasoline compared to the 250 L-6 in the '67.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Installed my replacement hood latch, after I cleaned it and detail painted it.
Installed the correct PCV vent and tube.

Got these parts from other members on the WTB section, which is the only way to go for me these days. Thanks for the easy transactions!

Surfed the net to find parts for it. Someday my 18 month old will help me work on it instead of keep me from working on it

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Changed the oil and filter on the 72, of course I had too because of getting flooded. Luckily it didn't get the engine in the 67, but I've had my hands full since Wednesday!

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

I cut the shape out of a couple of 2" x 8" boards and screwed one to the floor and one to the seat bottom. I then cut individual pcs of plywood for the front and covered with carpet. This was an experiment but worked out pretty well. I used some cheap Pep Boys speakers and a 12 disc changer that I had laying around.

Freakshow, what are the specs on your axles? I have a 69 K10, I scored a barely used D44 out of an 81 3/4 ton. It has a posi unit, disc brakes and 8 lugs. I'm kinda trying to figure out what direction to go. If I should try converting it back to 6 lugs, or say screw it and switch the rears over to 8 lugs. I haven't bought the new wheels and tires yet, wanted to do 35x10.5 BFG MT Cragar 8 holes. The only offroading I do is on fire breaks and dry washes.

suggestions?

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

oh yeah, sorry, no recent pics.

I finished welding up the mounts for my Blazer gas tank. Got all the welds and bare metal rattle-canned flat black, and got the sending unit wire run. I don't know who 'fixed' the wiring before, but they were a big fan of twist and tape. So, I also got to repair and seal all the tail-light wiring and installed a 4 pin flat trailer wiring harness.

and, with a little help from the girlfriend, got the bed put back on and bolted down. Now to figure out the fuel filler...

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Had a friend alter/weld/smooth the power steering bracket Friday night. That was all I did to the '69 all weekend. I did get the engine pulled out of the wrecked '86 burb I bought and pulled the engine out of my '84 Trans Am yesterday though.

Anyone know why GM used a smaller flexplate on the 305 then what came on the 350 out of the burb? I should be able to switch them as needed I assume?

twice pipes

After thirteen years since I originally put my truck together, Today I had the exhaust re-done. Back in '97 I had turbo mufflers installed with the tailpipes exiting in front of the rear wheels. It wasn't overly loud, but I sure wasn't going to sneak up on anyone. Move forward to 2010. Those same mufflers were pretty much blown out, and pretty loud. Not leaking mind you, just blown out and rattly on the inside.

I told the exhaust guy I wanted the biggest, quietest mufflers I could get with the pipes exiting out the back! "Make this thing quiet!" Big smiley faces can't describe how happy I am with the results. It's so much more pleasant to drive without the constant drone of the engine. Oh and keep an eye on your mirror. That's me sneaking up on you.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Got a new outside door handle installed (thanks to Sharpie1972). Also realized that the door panel is completely worn out and have added a set to the list of items I need.

Re: What did you do to your truck today!

Got the new fuel pump on the 72 and put the front wheels back on. Then fired it up and got the carb set where it needed. Then moved it out from under the pine tree that died and has too come down. Next on the to do list is get the gas tank and seat back in and new brake system. Then it'll get put on the road and drove as I do the body work as time allows!

I opened my shop door, looked at my freshly painted 70 baking inside the non air conditioned shop, broke a sweat, and decided to work on the 84 GMC outside under a shade tree!
